Louis Rivoli Obituary

Louis Rivoli (Soup), 92, of Newark passed away on April 3, 2010, at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral service on Wednesday, April 7, at 10 a.m. at the Union Funeral Home-Lytwyn & Lytwyn, 1600 Stuyvesant Ave., Union, N.J., (unionfuneralhome.com), with the interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Louis was a prominent member of the greatest generation. He passed away surrounded by beloved friends. He was a lifelong resident of Newark and a former employee of the Newark Housing Authority. An Army cannoneer in World War II, Mr. Rivoli served in various positions on Anti-Air Craft guns in combat in the Southwest Pacific Islands, including Okinawa. A highly decorated veteran, he carried a heavy machine gun into battle at Okinawa. Louie was an extremely friendly individual, orphaned at age 10, he worked shining shoes since age eight. He dedicated his life to raise three physically challenged relatives. Louie was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Federation of Italian American Societies, Sons of Italy, Templars Civic Association, and the Elks Lodge 21 of Newark. He leaves behind no known relatives, but a bevy of friends, Nicholas Ciufi, who managed his care, Dominick and Maryann DePasquale, Ray McGee, Allen Calloway, Kelly Ford, Paul Campesi, Mark Russomanno, Grace Schmidt, Jennifer Pizzano, Charmane Mark, Jessica Selph, Nelson Cedeno, Miguelina Cedeno, Dr. James Foley, Joseph Savini, Lou and Joe Miele, William Calabrese and Jerry Galluzzo. He will be missed greatly. In lieu of flowers, donations to Deborah Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 820, Browns Mills, N.J. 08015, would be greatly appreciated.
