Why didn't I know I asked myself when I saw that the Clarence Darrow annual Memorial on Sunday, March 13, 2011 was to be dedicated to the late Lila Weinberg. When I googled her name I saw that Lila had died when I was in St. Francis Hospital recovering from acute appendicitis that almost killed me in May 2010. Lila was an elegant, dedicated radical intellectual who would have loved to witness the current, ongoing uprising (and we hope, resurrection) of the union movement in Wisconsin.
I learned to know Lila at the Newberry Library when I was responsible for organizing the annual Bughouse Square Debates from 2004 until I retired as manager of public programming from the Newberry in May 2008 and spend more than half time in Lake Geneva where my husband, Patrick Quinn (former NU archivist, 1974-2008) was born and grew up. We still have a home in Evanston at 2018 Lincoln, and I know that at least one of her daughters lives in Evanston too.
Lila will live forever in the memories of those who were privileged to know her.

Dearest Weinberg Family,
Lila and Arthur were such a big part of my childhood..growing up in the same building. Though our "meetings" were mainly in the elevator...I'll never forget all the smiles they both brought to my life. With love, Geraldine (Ginger) Williams-Ashman

Dear Weinberg Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I just wanted to share with you some comforting words from God's word the bible. In the book of Revelation 21:1-4 we are given the promise that very shortly all pain, suffering and even death will be no more. This is because according to 1 John 4:8 "God is love."
I hope these few words will bring you comfort in the up coming days and weeks.

Dear Hedy, Anita and Wendy,
My mother (Rose Lieberman Beslow) and your mother were dearest of friends when they were girls, through high school and afterward. I remember when your dad came into her life - she brought him to Chicago before they were married to meet all her Chicago friends at my parents' 15th wedding anniversary. Lila (and Arthur as well) were very special people to me. Sending you sympathy and love, Faye Beslow Albert.

Dear Hedy, Anita, and Wendy,
Your parents and I were carrel neighbors at the Newberry Library in the 60s and 70s. Throught the big windows, we could see the Hancock going up, and in the big room we shared comments with many interesting researchers & scholars. Your parents were among the liveliest and kindest. They were wonderful people and you can be sure that many of us who were in the Newberry when they were have a warm glow of memory about them. God bless. Lenore Glanz
