Family-Placed Death Notice

Leon Mitchell Conner, Jr., age 77, Arlington, GA, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at his residence. Funeral services Friday, April 18, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in Arlington Baptist Church. Rev. Gary Hadden officiating. Interment, Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation Thursday, April 17, 2003, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Colquitt Funeral Home. Mr. Conner was born September 20, 1925 in Richmond County GA. He was a retired school superintendent, and a member of Arlington Baptist Church. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He was a teacher and coach at Arlington High School from 1950-1952. He was promoted to Principal and continued his coaching career in the Arlington School System from 1952-1960. Mr. Conner advanced to Superintendent of Calhoun County School System in 1962 where he stayed until retirement in 1983. Mr. Conner served as President of the Georgia Association of School Superintendents from 1973-1974. He also served 8 years as secretary-treasurer. He was the Division President of the Georgia Association of Educators from 1973-1974. Mr. Mitch Conner coached dozens of boys and girls of Arlington through the years. His family requests that any who played on teams coached by Mr. Mitch Conner during his tenure in Arlington locate the reserved seating area and special sign in that will be in place at the church for his service. The gentlemen of this group are asked to also serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Conner was a member of the American Legion Post Number 223, the Masonic Lodge-Arlington Lodge Number 249, Arlington Lion's Club, Georgia Association of School Superintendents and the Georgia Association of Educators. Survivors are one daughter, Cindy Conner Lee and husband James Larry Lee of Fayetteville, GA; 2 sons, Leon Mitchell Conner, III and wife, Pamela Albright Conner of Arlington, GA, Gregory Stewart Conner and wife Cindy Hunnicutt Conner of Blakely, GA; 4 grandchildren, Meagan Elizabeth Lee, daughter of Cindy and Larry Lee, Rebecca Lynn Conner, daughter of Leon and Pam Conner, Benjamin Mitchell Conner, son of Leon and Pam Conner, Gregory Canton Conner, son of Greg and Cindy Conner; 2 brothers, James Lovelace Conner and wife Pat of Cleveland, GA, Jerry Eaves Conner and wife Ruth of Alexandria, VA; a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Peggy Stewart Conner (March 31, 1934-March 5, 2003). Active Pallbearers Ike Newberry, Dan Harris, Mac Gaines, Jim Pope, Roy Stuart, Jimmy Hodge Timmons.
