He was the companion of Mary Coulombe.
Born in Stoneham, Mass., a son of the late John R. and Barbara (Stotz) Johnston, he graduated from Stoneham High School in 1927. He graduated from Harvard College in 1932, Harvard Business School in 1934, and Dean Academy, now Dean College in Franklin, Mass., in 1938.
He had lived in Cumberland for the past 10 ten years.
Mr. Johnston owned the former Johnston Travel Co. in Chelmsford for 30 years until his retirement. Earlier, he was the director of administration at Cabot Corp. in Boston for 32 years; he retired to open the Chelmsford business.
Besides his companion, Mr. Johnston is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Marjorie Johnston of Naples, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Joseph Sheedy and Linda and Bradford Emerson, all of Chelmsford; a stepdaughter, Lynn Coulombe of Lincoln, R.I.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was also the brother of the late J. Richard Johnston, Lt. Commander, U.S.N.
