The Chicago Public Library has lost a special member of our family. Always ready with a smile, a kind word, or a joke, Larry was a great public servant. His friends, family and colleagues will feel his loss for a long time. My condolences to the O'Connor family and all members of the CPL family, especially the staff of the South District and Mount Greenwood. May memories of happier times spent in Larry's company bring comfort in the days ahead.

Larry was one of my troop leaders of troop 785. Some of my best memories of my childhood have larry in them, all the years of Owasippe white water rafting, all of the trips we went on. He always was there making everybody laugh. Your Familyhas my prayers and condolences with your loss of a great man.
Sincerely

My heart is breaking with the news of Larry’s death. I have an 11-year-old daughter, Victoria, who is medically fragile / multiply disabled. For years, Larry went out of his way make her feel very special. They had an irreplaceable bond that was one of a kind. If he did not see us for a while, he would always call to see if Victoria was O.K. When she was hospitalized, he and the library team would send cards, flowers, or some type of gift.

Whatever Victoria’s interest was, Larry would save books for her on that specific subject. Whenever we went the library, Victoria immediately asked for a hug. Larry would always come around the desk, kneel, and give her a hug (Victoria is in a wheelchair.) I never imagined that Larry would beat Victoria to heaven. I know she has an angel watching out for her now. My prayers go out to Larry’s family and our friends at the library who have to try to go on without him.

Love,

Larry was Troop Committee Chair for Troop 785 of St Walter's Parish in the Beverly Community of Chicago, an active Life Member of the Owasippe Staff Association, a Brotherhood Member of the Order of The Arrow, and a dedicated Scouter to his unit and to Owasippe Scout Reservation which he considered his second home.

For at least the last ten years, Larry devoted most weekends of each summer to volunteering with the maintenance staff at Owasippe Scout Reservation. For years, he has also been one of the attending leaders with his troop at Camp Blackhawk, Owasippe. Larry was a fervent supporter for the preservation of Owasippe as-is and was steadfastly against its sale for housing development.

As a youth, Larry grew up with his two brothers and sister in the South Shore Community of Chicago and was a Scout in Troop 595 where their father was also a Scout leader. He was heavily involved
as member of the Order of the Arrow as a youth with his local chapter and later became the ceremonial team advisor to Onchiota Chapter of Owasippe Lodge #7. I'm sure there will be more stories told in the coming days of his service and good deeds to Scouting and his devotion to his family.

His absence will be felt in many places in our Scouting community and he leaves a void that will be hard to fill. Not often in the forefront, Larry was very active behind the scenes and was a role model for unselfish service to youth.

We have lost a dear friend and great Scouter but have many great memories and lessons to cherish.

Dear O'Connor family,

We were so sorry to hear about Larry. He was such a help to my boys' when they were in Boy Scouts. I saw him a month ago and he asked about the boys, as he always did, and then asked how I was doing. He was always so thoughtful. He will be missed by all of the people that knew him.

Going to the library just won't be the same. Larry had a wicked sense of humor and was very understanding when this harried mother had overdue books. I always enjoyed meeting him at the library. My condolences to his family.

I was fortunate to have known Larry since he was an Explorer Scout. He was truly a first class human, and one that all kids could look up to. I'll miss his laugh, his jokes, and his company. All of his family and friends have my condolences.

O'Connor Family,
What I will miss most about Larry is him calling the house and saying things like this is the younger and better looking O'Connor. His attitude and outlook on life were truly formidable.
