L. Borchardt Obituary

Borchardt, L. Richard (Dick) of Park Ridge, Illinois, and Longboat Key Florida, died on Sunday, August 26 at age 74. He was the devoted husband and best friend of Beverly for 54 wonderful years and the father of Scott (Judy), Kirk (Cecilia), Pamela Drehmel (Robert), Carol Novak (Dan) and loving grandfather of Jim, John and Haley Novak; Sam, Jake and Angela Drehmel; Ryan and Riley Borchardt. He left behind his family who will miss him forever and many friends and colleagues who will cherish his memory. Dick spent his entire 43-year career with Martin Boyer Company Inc. one of the nations leading administrators of self-insurance programs. He was a partner in the firm and became President in 1972, a role in which he continued after the firm merged with Aon Corporation in 1990. He was an officer of the Lloyd's Brokers Association; the Illinois Surplus Lines Association; consultant to numerous businesses in the public and private sectors, and a frequent lecturer at American Management Association seminars. In 1978, the Illinois Industrial Commission appointed Dick chairman of the first task force to establish guidelines and regulations for Self-Insurance qualification in Illinois. He was proud of his close relationship with many clients, and to be one of the architects of the Illinois Municipal Leagues Self-Insurance pool that began with 48 cities in 1981, and has grown to almost 800 Illinois municipalities. Upon his retirement in 1996, Dick and Beverly established the Borchardt Family Foundation, an Illinois Charitable Corporation. Dick often said, "we'll never be a Gates Foundation, but there's no greater thrill than being able to give directly to smaller causes and entities often overlooked by major charitable organizations." Although he is gone, he will long be remembered for his kindness and humor. Services to be held Thursday, August 30 at Ryan-Parke Funeral Home, 120 South Northwest Hwy., (2 blks, South of Touhy), Park Ridge from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick's name will be gratefully accepted at Avenues to Independence, 515 Busse Highway, Park Ridge, IL, 60068; The Anthony J. Schaeffer Professorship Fund, Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, Tarry Building 16-703, 303 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611-3008; Rainbow Hospice, 444 N. My deepest sympathy Mrs. Borchardt, Pam and all the Borchardt family on the loss of your biggest admirer. Dick Borchardt was a man with a lovely smile, an easy laugh, and a generous heart that was crazy in love with his wife and family. One didn't have to be a genius to see how his face lit up in your presence or how he swelled with pride when he spoke of you. May he rest in peace and I hope you find comfort in the love and life you shared.

Dear Borchardt Family,
My sympathy to all. Dick was a special person; a man who made a difference. He was a positive influence on everthing and every person that he touched. He was successful in business, in relationships, and most of all, in being a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He left the world a better place, but men like Dick are
irreplaceable.

He will always be of blessed memory.

People like Dick are never forgotten. They shape the personality of the people they meet in their lifetime. As a banking liaison from the Harris Bank I had limited opportunity to come into direct contact with Dick, but even in that limited time Dick had a way of making me feel valued and important. I felt that he brought out the best in me and in everyone else who had the pleasure of knowing him. Dick's love and pride in his family were woven into a magic carpet that propelled him with grace above the murky waters of the business world. I always felt the power of his love for his family and the loyalty he would have for his nearest and dearest no matter what the circumstances. What an awesome person who left a legacy, compelling others to emulate his character, his smile, his loyalty!

I will always remember Uncle Dick for his kind words, his humor, and his ability to listen (even to a young nephew). No family get together at his house would be complete without him playing at least one song on the piano. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Dear Bev and Family,
Unfortunately as I was reading today's Tribune, Dick's face caught my eye and couldn't believe that he had passed. We had no idea he was ill. It was a horrible shock. Stan was so sad to lose someone he had known since grade school and we would like to extend our very deepest sympathy to you and your family. We are leaving shortly to go out of town and won't be able to attend the services, but know that our hearts and prayers will be with you nontheless.

Fondly,
Stan and Sylvia Anderson
