Alan, Naomi, Carolyn, Owen, Lynn, Jack and Katie,
We just received news of Kristen's death and we are heartbroken. The first memory suddenly called to mind was of our daughter, Susan, returning home from a playdate with Katie and announcing "I want to be just like Katie's big sister Kris. She is going to a school called the Academy and she says it is very hard but she loves it. I am going to the Academy just like Kris." We were big fans - at age three, Jessica went through a period of about six months when she stubbornly insisted her name was Kris-Hinrichs-Bankston. As painfully shy as she was, she sidled up to Santa (Dick) when he arrived at the annual Christmes party that year and whispered in his ear: "If there is a present for Jessica Bankston, it's really for me, Kris- Hinrichs-Bankston." Our entire family loved and admired Kris, as did countless others; she was such a special person. May you eventually find yourself in a place where grief and peace can co-exist in your hearts. Cherish your wonderful memories and know Kris made an indelible dent in creation. We are praying for each of you and for Kristen.

I went to your wedding, almost 10 years ago, Memorial Day weekend in New Mexico. What a beautiful weekend it was! There was so much love, so much happiness, so much hope.

As a foreigner new in this country, I had the privilege of being invited by Kristen and her kind parents to stay with the bridesmaids, enjoying a SPA day at the pool. There was a fortune-teller--he told us about our future. Everyone's was bright, brilliant.

I was the only single of the girls. Kristen and the girls whispered before she threw the bouquet, and it miraculously landed in front of my eyes, right next to my hands. I happily picked it up, keeping it with me for days, until it was dry but still bright. The next would be me, that was Kristen's hope. Now, just as Kristen had hoped, I have found myself the most beautiful man in the world and have a beautiful baby girl. I know Kristen would be so happy to see this day.

I emailed her, and she emailed back. We decided to stay in touch. But the next time I heard anything about her was now. I can't believe fate is so cruel to my beautiful loving friend Kristen. I want to see her again, and share with her our experiences of being a mommy, a wife, a happy and mature woman.

My transition into the new life in America would have been so much more difficult without the kind words and helping hands of Kristen, without the late night girl talks, without her encouraging words, without the walks on the Georgetown campus, without her soothing and yet assuring voice, without her twinkling blue eyes...

Dear Kristen, I know you are in a better place and resting in peace. I know you are smiling, just as you always did, down at us, hoping the best for everyone. I know your family will carry on with strength and courage, just as you would hope them to. You should be proud that the world is that much beautiful because of you.

Your Friend Li
