Kevin McCann Obituary

McCann, Kevin Best Man and Go-To Guy The life of Kevin McCann, 23 a young man of remarkable ability, impressive accomplishment, and exceptional potential, came to a abrupt and tragic conclusion on Saturday, when he was shot and killed in Raleigh, North Carolina. A standout wrestler throughout high school and college, as well as in international competition, Kevin continued to apply the focus, dedication and enthusiasm forged on the mat to his family, friendships, and emerging professional life. "Kevin was a standout in every respect, and he'd be the last person to say it," explained his older brother, Terry. "He was humble and soft-spoken, but in a minute he could get you laughing so hard you couldn't breathe. He wasn't one in a million. He was unprecedented. There was absolutely nobody like him." A 1999 graduate of Notre Dame High School in Niles, IL, Kevin distinguished himself as captain of the varsity wrestling team, earning all-conference honors, as well as a host of tournament victories. He was a conference, regional and sectional champion, and a state and national qualifier. He was also a two-year starter on the varsity football team. After high school, Kevin went on to become a three-year varsity letterman, wrestling for the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, where he also majored in business. In both the class room, and in competition, he continued to earn the respect and admiration of friends and teammates, who shared the opinion that Kevin was an outstanding individual. Prior to his passing, Kevin was enjoying the start of a career as an insurance broker, working as an account executive at Chicago's Mesirow Financial. In the brief time he was there, his co-workers recognized that Kevin was an individual of rare confidence and competence. "Kevin was our go-to guy," explained one of his colleagues. "He was as solid as they came, and mature beyond his years." At the beginning of summer, the usually understated Kevin offered an eloquent toast as best man at Terry's wedding. He told his brother how much he loved home, and how he would always offer unlimited support, because that is what Terry has always given him. "In just 23 years, Kevin had a lifetime of achievement and accomplishment," added Terry, "but his full potential was not even close to being realized." In addition to Terry and his wife, Eileen, Kevin is survived by his mother and father, Jane and Dennis McCann, as well as an uncountable amount of relatives, friends, coaches and teammates who share the shock of this untimely loss. Funeral Thursday, September 9, 9:30 a.m. from Cumberland Chapels (Lawrence Friel Funeral Director), 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge, to St. Monica Church, 5136 N. Nottingham St., Chicago, Mass 9:30 a.m. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Visitation Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kevin's name to the Notre Dame High School wrestling program, in care of Head Coach Augie Genovese. 708-456-3410 or www.cumberlandchapels.com

Memories and Condolences
for Kevin McCann

Not sure what to say?

Anthony Raymond Crissie

October 4, 2004

My deepest sympathy to the Kevin's Family and Friends. I unfortunately just found out about this tragedy. I wish I could have offered my condolences sooner. I knew Kevin for a short time, our friendship had just started when we met at the Hartford School of Insurance in April. He was an incredible friend in the short time I knew him and I will miss him dearly.

When we heard the news about your Kevin, we were horrified and wanted to send our warmest thoughts and prayers to your family.

Dennis, you were so very kind to the Milano family over the years. Nick, Dan, Sarah, Meg and Chris were all at Maine South. We hold you in our hearts.

Life is not fair. We will never understand.

September 12, 2004

Dear Mr McCann and family,

I attended Maine South from 1999 to 2004, and had Mr McCann as a counsler for my first year there. Though I did not know Kevin personally, I did know his father and I cannot think of a better person; I cannot imagine Kevin was any less of a wonderful person than his father. I am truly sorry for your loss and I know no words could ever lessen the pain of losing a loved one, especially a child.

My heart goes out to your whole family,

Sandy Sa'id

September 10, 2004

Jane and Dennis and the whole McCann family.

I had the honor of attending the wake and the funneral of your, as you put it Jane, "your beautiful boy Kevin". I had to write to you and say what a great feeling it had to give to you, Jane and you Dennis, to know that your son touched so many lives in such a short 23 years of life. But it was also a tribute to the two of you, because it was you that molded him into such a wonderful man.

It is a hard time now but as they say, time heals, and it does, but you will always have him in your heart and in your memories

September 10, 2004

There are no words to console you in this terrible hour of the loss of your child and his friend. There is no answer to the why such a tragedy has touched your lives. I have read the testimonies to your son and his friend and it would have been an honor to have known them. I would like you to know that although we do not know your family, we grieve for you and we pray for you that God will give you peace and begin to heal your lives and your broken hearts. I am so sorry for the trauma this has brought to the lives of their friends who were present on that day. My heart is heavy for all of you and I am deeply saddened that such a thing could happen in our community. I believe the world has lost two wonderful young men who made a positive difference in the world we live in. Their legacys will continue through you and all who knew them. God love you and keep you close to him in your grief. The sun does not shine as bright today nor is the sky as blue but you will find that your memories will help to clear the gloom as you see the faces of the lives that Kevin and Bret have touched. You are in out thoughts and prayers.

Dear McCann Family,

A former colleague at Notre Dame High School informed me of your tremendous loss. I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through such a difficult time. Kevin was in my math class at NDHS, and I remember his spirit. I enjoyed seeing him around campus and seeing him bring a smile to others. He truly was a DON. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

I went to Saint Monicas from 6-7 grade and then Maine South from freshman to senior year (c/o 2000) Although I did not know Kevin persaonally when I went to Monicas or South I did have you, Mr. McCann as my counselor all 4 years in HS. My mother and I are shocked and saddened by your loss and hold you all deeply in our thoughts and prayers. I want to take this time to thank you Mr. McCann for all your help in HS and being there for me when my grandfather died my senior year. Kevin will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved him.

Your in our hearts and Prayers.

I am honored to say I had known Kevin since grammar school at St. Monica back in the day. Kevin was one of those kids who could light up a room with his smile and laugh. With him sitting next to you in a class, there was never a dull moment! His sense of humor was second to none. He was so extremely talented in every aspect that it seemed there was no obstacle he could not overcome. He was a star athlete with the brains to back it up. Kevin McCann will never be forgotten. My prayers go out to the McCann family and the other friends of Kevin. We all mourn the loss of such a wonderful individual. God Bless you all.

To the McCann family:

I am not sure if you are even going to read this but I want to say that I am so sorry for a loss that has no explanation. I did not know Kevin but I knew who Terry was from the boys he hung around with from ND. I rember Terry as being a respectful boy who always had a smile when you seen him and this is what I understand that Kevin was. I have no words to say as know one can take the pain away. I believe that Kevin is in a place that he deserves to be in and that is Heaven. He lived and died with his best friend. So at least there is no worry that he is alone. When my dad died (as it was an accident) I never thaught that I would be able to live but in a mysterous way we do. I think that it is because God helps you get through it. This is when faith does help and talking to Kevin will. I know that he will not be able to answer back but I know that he is listening.

The McCann Family:

Even though I didn't know your son Kevin, my brother James went to high school with him. I feel so sad for your loss. I knew all my brothers friends but unforunately I never met Kevin. I live down the street where Kevin was laid out and I passed by there yesterday and saw the long line of people that loved Kevin waiting to say their good-byes. He seemed like a great kid and iam sure he will be greatly missed. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

I am a former Spanish teacher of Kevin's from Notre Dame High School. I was shocked and deeply saddened when I heard of Kevin's death. I remember Kevin as an intelligent and caring young man who was also quick to smile. All these years later I can still picture him in my classroom wearing an ND uniform on the day of a game. I cannot imagine the depth of your pain and please know that there are many of us who will forever remember your son. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Marybeth Morris-Boyd

I am so sorry for the loss of your son, brother, and friend. I did not know Kevin or Brett, but as a person in the community where these children lost their lives, our hearts are heavy as you grieve. I realize your tears are many and it feels your heartbreak will never end. When you think you cannot bear another minute, know that you are not alone.Hold on to the faith that guides you and hold on to eachother. I read the entries in the guest book. What a wonderful testimony of the lives of these two young men, it must have been a great joy to know them and be a part of their lives. I pray for your peace, for restful sleep, a mending for your shattered life and comfort to your soul. May God bless both your families.

Our son, Brian was on the same Team Illinois, USA with Kevin and Brett when they toured Australia in 1997. They had previously known each other as friendly rivals in grammar school and high school, but became fast friends when they competed in Australia. Dear McCann Family,

The last time I saw Kevin was 17 years ago when we were in first grade together at St. Monica’s. My family moved away in December of 1987, and while I didn’t stay in touch with any classmates, I still remember a few names and faces. One of them, of course, is your Kevin, and how could I forget him? While I don’t recall any conversation, I can still picture him as 6 years old, with a big, happy smile on his face. I was not at all surprised to hear what a fine young man he became, and what wonderful things he accomplished in his short life. It sounds like he gave and received more love in his 23 years than many do in a life five times as long. For that, I am very thankful.

I pray that you all find comfort and strength in your faith during this difficult time. God’s peace be with you.

Dear the McCann Family:

I do not know what to say with a loss as tragic as this. I knew Terry from friends and I can not imagine loosing a sibiling especially that were so close to eachother. When I lost my father tragically people say that it gets easier and the only way that it does is by living on the memory. Talk about Kevin and all that he has done for the family. This will help him feel present to you and help you get threw the next couple years that lye ahead. It is ok to cry as it shows how you feel.

The next couple days are not as hard as it is when it is over. Remeber that your family and friends are always there for you and take it as it comes because it is the only thing to let you get through the weeks that lie ahead.

In my thoughts and prayers and we know for sure that Kevin is in heaven.

McCann family,

Just like many, I was shocked and saddened with the news of Kevin's death. There's no doubt this young man had everything going for him and opportunities waiting.

Kevin was no doubt a leader. I remember him as a strong one at that with the Notre Dame wrestling team. Not only was he our best wrestler, but was also our go-to-guy. He was always there to help and always had a smile on his face.

It's so sad that his full purposes on this earth were cut short, but more importantly we will never forget the countless memories you left.

Kevin, you will be greatly missed.

You are in our prayers,

Dear McCann Family;

I am so saddened for your tragic loss. My name is Mary Drislane, I am the mother of Erin Krukowski (1999) & Lindsey Krukowski (2000) of Maine South. Dennis was my daughters' counselor. They also had the wonderful opportunity to "work" with Dennis as Wrestlerttes. The kind of man he was to my daughters and me as a parent obviously exemplifies the kind of father he is. This is why you all must be proud of Kevin, because I am sure he was a remarkable young man. The tragedy that you are all facing now is so unbelievable to even comprrrrhend. My prayers and thoughts are with you, from the bottom of my heart. Remember the love and memories of your son and brother...hopefully those wonderful memories will help you face the dark days ahead. Think of Kevin in the way he lived his life and let that be your inner peace. God bless you all always. Remeber that Kevin is now living in an eternal life with God and the angels. He will never be gone ...because he will live forever in your hearts and minds.

With my deepest sympathy,

Mary Drislane

To the McCann Family,

I was deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Kevin. As an avid High School wrestlig fan I was able to watch Kevin and Brett wrestle many times and was able to see firsthand the bond that the two shared. It was something truly special and will be missed by all who knew him. You, his parents, should be proud. I will keep all of you in my prayers and with 3 young children of my own, can only hope that some day they will have some of the qualities that made Kevin so special. God Bless!
