Kathleen Hard Obituary

Hard, Kathleen "Kathy" M.

Kathy was born and raised in Gary, Indiana and spent her adult life in the Chicago area, most recently in Oak Park and Northlake. She retired from the State of Illinois in 2013 and was a lifelong union activist, and advocate for social justice and animal rights. She passed away on August 8, 2025 following many years of disability and health challenges, but was always upbeat and most concerned about those around her. She was Resident Council president at Casa Scalabrini Village, where she lived independently, and where she also led a popular weekly Trivia competition, which she designed and developed herself. Kathy will be sorely missed by her best friend Sue Zavoskey, and her beloved relatives, niece Jeanette Hard, sister-in-law Midalia (Meg) Hard, grandniece Ahnastasia (Tashie) Hard, grandnephews Khristian Hard and Ahmad Passmore; and cousin Thelma Rosenfeld. She would consider it an honor if donations in her name were made to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Arrangements are private.

RIP dear cousin. Even when we played together as children, you were wise beyond your years. I cherish your wisdom, your inner strength, your compassion, your humor, your capacity to speak up for those who have no voice , and your writing talent that touched so many. I cherish you. Love forever. Cousin Thelma

Yesterday

Kathy Hard was a fighter for rights and Justice. I met her at the Austin District office. She was our Union Representative. She was fantastic. She was a teacher and a leader. She went above and beyond to help co-workers and the Public. She went the extra mile in helping people in her Caseload. My Prayers go out to her family.God Bless her for all the great things she did for so many.

Yesterday

I worked with Kathy for many years at the IDHS office on Chicago Avenue until she left the office due illness. She was a joy to work with. She worked hard. She did not hesitate to share her knowledge about the work we did each day. She helped me to become an even better worker after meeting her. She was kind funny caring and could be a hell raiser if need be. I remember when Hurricane Katrina hit in the South she did hesitate to be of assistance to my Mother. Kathy was that type of person she didn´t wait on anybody else to lead. She was the leader. I will never forget her. Always in heart. Condolences to Sue. Her Family friends and colleagues she left behind.

Yesterday

As President of our Resident Council at Casa Scalabrini, Kathy was a positive role model and generous protector of the rights and interests of her peers. She generously gave of her time and energy in many ways, one of which was to provide and update information for the weekly Trivia game she hosted at Casa Scalabrini Village.
She will be missed by so many of us.

Yesterday

Kathy was tireless in her positive attitude and suggestions as President of the Resident Council at Casa Scalabrini. Although I never attended the weekly Trivia games she hosted I was aware of the pleasure she derived from, and the precision with which she chose the information shared at those sessions.
Kathy will be greatly missed here at Casa Scalabrini.
