June Quan Obituary

June Marie Quan 1930 - 2010 Resident of San Francisco June M. Quan passed away peacefully on December 20, 2010, surrounded by family. Born June Marie Chan 80 years ago in Oakland, she was a longtime resident of San Francisco. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, June dedicated her life to helping others. She taught English to immigrants, was an active Chinatown social worker, and served on numerous boards and commissions. June's work also included a lifelong association with the YWCA, where she served on the local and national boards, as well as the World Council. June traveled extensively, and was also a patron of the arts in San Francisco. Although medical issues slowed her down in recent years, June always remained involved, interested and engaged in social causes. She is survived by husband Jack; children Katie, Barbara, David and Richard; and grandchildren Eric, Sarah, Gina, Michelle, Kristen and Emily. A celebration of June's life will be held at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland on January 22, 2011 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in June's memory be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association at www.apdaparkinson.org, or to: June M Quan Memorial Fund c/o YWCA Berkeley/Oakland 2600 Bancroft Way Berkeley, CA 94704

June Quan was an indefatigable champion of women and families, especially those less fortunate than others. Throughout her life she generously dedicated her quiet charm, lively intelligence and warm sense of humor to improving the lives of so many in need. She lived to make the world a more compassionate place. Those of us who experienced the pleasure of working with June on various charitable enterprises, including participation on various YWCA Boards of Directors, will fondly remember her and her tireless leadership for years to come. Her positive influence has genuinely affected all of us whose lives she touched. My sincerest condolences to June's beloved family. She was a rare treasure and a fabulous woman who will be greatly missed.

Heggedal, Norway, January 20, 2011.

To June's family.
It was with great sadness we received the message that June has passed away.
June and I became pen friends when she was 16 years old and I was 18 years old. Girl guides in San Francisco sent letters to the school I was attending (in Narvik in Norway). This was how we became pen friends, and we had very good contact during all these years. We had common interests both as youths and as grownups. We exchanged information about our work and first of all about our children and grandchildren. Albrecht and I appreciated it very much to see all of you 15 years ago when we visited June & Jack in San Francisco. It was also a great pleasure to us that June & Jack visited us in Oslo the year after.
We sincerely hope that our families will keep the good relation that June and I had for 65 years!
We are thinking about you now and we share your grief.

Love from Klara & Albrecht, Tor Egil, Else, Inger Ann and families.

To Rich, Donna, and the entire Quan family. My sincere sympathy to you all upon the loss of your mother/grandma/wife, June. Although I didn't know her, it appears she was a heck of a person who did a lot of good during her life. I know that she will be missed.
