Julius LOIA Obituary

Age 77 Of St. Paul Passed away at his home on Jan. 6, 2013 after four months of hospice care. He was born in Queens, NY on Jan. 17, 1935. Lou is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruth; close friend, Jeanene Rethlake; sister, Claire Scott; nieces, Jeanne (Van) Johnstone, Grace (Tom) Licon, Elizabeth (James) Olsen; and nephew, John Scott. Preceded in death by his parents, Gaetano & Carmela (Brix); and brother-in-law, Bill Scott. He attended PS 163 in Flushing, NY and Jamaica HS in Jamaica, NY. After graduation he joined the Navy Submarine Service. After the Navy, he attended the University of Florida, receiving his BA in History in '63. He then received his MA at the University of Georgia, and went on to teach history at Clinton Junior College in IA. While teaching there he would meet Ruth Dahling, and they married on June 17, 1967. The newlyweds moved to the Twin Cities in 1968, where Lou attended graduate school and worked for Medtronic for many years until his MS became disabling. Memorials preferred to Fairview Hospice Fund. A private family interment will take place at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Memorial Mass will be held on Sat., Jan. 12, 11AM at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 1500 Franklin Ave SE, MPLS, MN 55414. While I did not have the honor of knowing or serving with Lou, he is a navy and submarine brother. Thank you for your service to your country sir, and now at long last sailor you have eternal fair winds and following seas. We send our condolences to his wife Ruth, and his family and friends.
