Julia Charles Obituary

CHARLES Julia Catherine 7-22-1931 ~ 2-19-2010 Julia Catherine Charles passed away peacefully at the age of 78 in Toledo, Ohio, surrounded by her family. Julia was born in Bowman, South Carolina, to Jetty Neal and Roscoe Charles. In 1936 the family moved to Washington, DC, where Julia was raised along with 8 other siblings. Julia accepted Christ as her savior at a young age and was baptized as a member of the Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. As a youngster she followed her mother to Southern Baptist Church where she served as an usher for many years. Preceding her in passing were her parents; step-father Alfred Kennedy; three brothers, Archie, Calvin, and William; a daughter, Catherine; sons, Ulysses and Johnny Thompson. Julia was a graduate of the Nursing School at Prince Georges Community Hospitalin Prince Georges, Maryland. She worked as a nurse for many years at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. Julia later studied keypunch operations/data entry and became a valued employee with Safeway Food Stores before retiring in 1981. After raising her family, Julia moved to Toledo, Ohio, in 1982. In Toledo she worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Area Office On Aging-Passport Program from which she retired in 1996. She attended Indiana Avenue Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio. Julia leaves behind to cherish her memory three children and a daughter-in-law; son, Gregory A. Thompson (Sonja) of Clinton MD, daughters Anatola A. Thompson and Veronica A. Simmons of Toledo, Ohio. She leaves behind five sisters and one brother-in-law in the Maryland area, Georgia L. Williams, Minnie L. Mathews, Alfreda Ransom, Gladys Moore (Daniel), and Bernice Kennedy. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. The family wishes to thank Communicare at Waterford Commons Nursing Facility and the University Medical Center - The University of Toledo - MICU for everything they did to make Julia comfortable. Viewing will be held at House of Day Funeral Home located at 2550 Nebraska Ave. Toledo, Ohio 43607 on Thursday, February 25, 2010, from 12:00 Noon - 2:00 PM. There will be no funeral services.
