Joy Powell Obituary
Danville, Va. - Joy Reese Powell, 71 of 116 Matthew Circle, Danville, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 24, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Reese and the late Hattie Shorter Reese.
Mrs. Powell was a graduate of Brosville High School. She was employed at Belk Leggett Department Store and later was a manager and buyer for J.C. Penney Department Store for several years. She was very active at First Pentecostal Holiness Church on North Main Street, where she was a Sunday School Teacher and Class President.
She was married to Neal A. Powell on February 11, 1950.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Michael Powell and wife, Sue of Danville, Va., and Gerald Powell and wife, Janet of Danville, Va; one sister, Judy Wallace of Ringgold, Va.; three brothers, William Reese of Blairs, Va., Charles Reese of Dry Fork, Va., and Billy Reese of Danville, Va.; 2 grandchildren, Kristie Livengood and husband, Chuck of Durham, N.C., and Brandon Powell of Danville, Va.; and one great grandchild, Caroline Livengood.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 2004 at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Ward and the Rev. Billy Scearce officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20th at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the residence, 116 Matthew Circle.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
