I was very sorry to hear of your loss. I worked for Joe for 15 years and have some very fond memories of him. He gave me my first job out of college in 1967.

I am very saddened by the news of Dr. Joe's passing away, who is my godfather. He was a unique person with a great big warm heart! That is how I will always remember him.

I was an employee of Dr. Calandra's both at the Bacteriology Labs at Northwestern University Dental School, Chicago in 1956 and at Bio Test in Skokie in 1958. Dr. Calandra was my first director after graduation with a Bachelors Degree in Biology from Carthage College, Carthage, Illinois. I was a resident of Chicago and he was my first employer.
I was drafted into the Army from that position and was in Ft. Huachuca, AZ from 1957-1958. I requested an early release from the Service and Dr. Calandra helped me to obtain that release. He then became my employer at Bio Test. I left there in October of 1958 to enter the teaching field where I made my career and from which I retired.
I have a long lasting regard for Joe because he was so understanding and a wonderful man to work with. He was a mentor of mine for many years.
I am sorry to hear of his passing and hope that has finally found lasting peace in the place of our Lord.
Sympathy and Regards,
Justin F. Marino

Dear David and Joe (and family), My whole family and I send our deepest sympathies to you in experiencing the loss of a great man and a great father. We are only lucky enough to have one father, and experiencing them pass from our lives is devastating, despite the mental preparations. Be consoled by your family and friends, feel hugs from across the oceans.
