Joseph Amella Obituary

Amella, Joseph S. Age 75, of Schaumburg. With a heavy heart his family announces the passing of Joseph, on February 9th following a prolonged illness. Loving husband of the late Mary L. Amella (nee Gorie); loving father to his daughters, Gia M. (Giuseppe Mangione), Frances M. (fiancé David Chase) and his late son, Carmen M Amella; loving son of the late Carmen and the late Lucille (nee Alessi) Amella. He was a devoted brother to Frances (David) Varner, late Stella M (late Anthony) Pauls, and the late Stephen J (Helga) AmelIa; loving uncle and godfather to many. He was devoted partner to Renata Riccobon, with whom he shared the last years of his life, and a loyal friend to many. Born and raised in the Bridgeport neighborhood in Chicago, Mr. Amella served overseas in Germany as a radio operator and worked for many years in the insurance industry in the Chicago area and California. In 1976, he and his family moved to Northern California, where he successfully ran a spray-equipment business as well as operated several restaurants before returning to the Chicago area to become a top performing insurance broker until his retirement. An avid golfer and proud veteran, Mr. Amella loved history, travel and sports. Over the years he was involved with many Italian American organizations and was extremely proud of his Sicilian heritage. He was the most generous of men and one of a kind in every way. I grew up living next door to Joe and his family on W. 25th Pl. Enjoyed all the great times with him and his sister Fran. He always had a smile and was very warm to us. He especially enjoyed teasing my sister Marilynn in a loving way. He always gave a helping hand when needed.

It is with a very sad heart that I heard of Joe's passing. I had seen him several times in the past few weeks and knew he was getting weaker. Inspite of his illness he was always the gracious host. Whenever I have fish with diced tomatoes and brussel sprouts, I will always think of him as one of my final memories. May he rest in peace now that he is out of his pain. My sincere sympathy to his entire family, especially Fran and Renata.
