John L. Kingston, 95, died on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 at Sharpe Care Nursing Home in Oconto Falls.
He was born in Waukesha on Feb. 2, 1916 to John H. and Ada Kingston (nee Beecroft).
John graduated from Waukesha High School. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and earned additional credits in Industrial Studies at Marquette University. He continued his education through WCTI and took graduate courses in real estate appraisal. He was an industrial engineer for Louis Allis Co. and Press Steel Tank Co. in Milwaukee. After retirement he began a new career as Assessor for the Village of Hartland and Mukwonago.
He was a life-long resident of Hartland where his role in public service included being elected to the Hartland Village Board and later served for eight years as village president. John was recognized throughout the state as an authority on village governance and as a man of foresight who was honored by his peers to serve as the presiding officer of the village section on the League of Wisconsin Municipalities and later was elected and promoted to the league's board of directors.
In 1974 he was a recipient of the first annual Environmental Quality Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sited for his significant contribution in the field of environmental planning.
John was very active in the community having 60 years of membership in the Flanagan-Dorn American Legion Post #294 and the Oconomowoc-Hartland Masonic Lodge #42 and Forty Et 8. He was a member and former president of the Hartland Toastmasters. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his loving daughters, Judith (Robert) Jandt of Pound, and Kitty Kingston (Christopher Jockheck) of Marshfield, and his granddaughter, Jennifer Frank (nee Jandt).
He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Sarah Bernice Kingston (nee Jenkins) in May 2002 and his sisters, Edna Koonz (nee Kingston) and Dorothy M. Kingston.
Special thanks to the residents and extraordinary staff members at Meadowlands Assisted Living Apartments in Oconto Falls where John made his home for the past eight years.
