I could always count on getting a warm smile and wonderful greeting in the morning from Joanne when she would come in to Wood Oaks to sub. There was a matching good night and smile from her at the end of the day when she would sign out. Joanne was always a positive and upbeat person, someone that everyone in the building loved, staff and students alike. I'm going to miss her dearly, but she will always live on my heart. Joanne was a gift to everyone she met.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Joanne Katz. I think of Joanne very fondly as I remember how welcoming she was to me when I first became a member of the “Fishlove Clan” as she put it. We (Tom and I) received our first wedding gift from Joanne and Jerry – even before we sent out our wedding announcements. I remember the phone call she made to us just prior to the birth of our son Maxwell. And, at this point, I had never met Joanne in person. And, when Tom, Max and I were in Glenview this past May, when Howie (Joanne's brother) was ill, Joanne reached out once again and opened her home to us. This was my first opportunity to meet her, and at this point, I knew Joanne was truly an amazing woman.
I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to meet Joanne and to experience her bounty of love prior to her passing. Though my time of knowing her was short, she will have a lifetime impact on me.
With Love,
Anna Fishlove

Mrs. Katz,
You always made sub days fun and we always looked forward to seeing your smiling face walk in the door. I'll always remember that we shared a Bat Mitzvah date-that weekend of September 15, 2001, what a great weekend that was. You will be missed.

I have worked in District 27 for the past 12 years and I just want to say that she was such an inspiration to us all. The kids adored her and speaking on behalf of the staff- we have always been so impressed with her devotion to the kids. You could always count on her to have a smile on her face. I know many teachers requested her to teach their classes since they knew she could always be counted on to get the job done. She was an amazing person and we'll miss her so much.

I subbed with Joanne at Wood Oaks for 10 years. She was outgoing, gracious, and friendly-- and she had a wonderful sense of humor. I loved working with her. We also enjoyed sharing recipes. When I left Wood Oaks, she was the first one to call and wish me luck. I'll miss her.

Dear Jim, Pam, Danny, Nikki, & Family- Your mom was such a wonderful, caring and giving person. She was always so kind to make our family feel as if we were a part of your family. I remember when my neighbor was very ill with cancer and your mom was there everyday to support her and help care for her. I know this is a difficult time for you all, and words cannot express how you must be feeling. Just know that you are in our prayers and we will always remember your beautiful mother for her kindness and infectious smile. Love, The Mick Family

Joanne's strength of character determined her success in life and impressed me the most - compassion, deference, joy, wisdom, hospitality (Ann and Irving's genes), alertness, dependability, faith, gentleness, discretion...I will never, ever forget. Heaven is a richer place indeed!

Mrs. Katz, was probably one of the nicest people i've ever met. it's not even funny, or measurable, about how much she gave to my school, and to me. I remember how she would always listen to our chorus and say how good we were, and no matter what, she would ALWAYS says we were good. if we had to improve, it would be, "your REALLY good! but lets be EVEN BETTER!". but i think everyone sorta knows, that whereever she is, that whoever is in her presence is damn lucky and will be hearing TONS of stories about how good kids are. i sorta wonder some days, when i see my peers act, how can we be considered kids, but mrs. katz, was the person, who made everyone feel good, and would always love the way the world was, but wasnt afraid to make it better. we miss you mrs. katz

Matthew & I were so shocked & saddened to hear of your mom's passing. Although we didn't know her very well, we know that your family is very close, and this must be so difficult for all of you. Know that you and your family are in our prayers, and that if you need anything, we are there for you. Take care of yourself, and find strength in the wonderful memories of your mom. Dear Jerry and family, We share your loss of my dear friend Joanne, my friend since kindergarten. Joanne was one of the most giving, loving people that I knew, always doing for others. My fond memories of her go back to birthday parties in the basement of the Fishlove home on Lunt, trips to the family farm, and fun times in the sorority. Joanne died too young, but she lived a happy life as a happy person.
Thank you to Laurie for calling us. Our love and condolences to the whole family.

We are out of town, but our thoughts are back home with your family. Thirty years ago Joanne was a homebound tutor for our daughter, and after that we carpooled our girls to dance lessons. I will always remember Joanne's smiling greetings and graciousness. May her memory be as a blessing.
