Joan Bailey Obituary

Bailey, Joan Marie October 16, 1948 to April 10, 2015 On Friday, April 10, Joan Marie Bailey passed away peacefully in her sleep. Joan is from the large and loving Langenbrunner family and was regarded as a vivacious and loving person by everyone she met. She studied nursing at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, before moving to Chicago in 1969. She met and married Jim Bailey there and they had three wonderful children. Amy, her daughter, is presently a Ph.D. student at UCLA. David is an inventive carpenter, building scientist and master of most physical trades. Brian, who attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Kent Law School, is an accomplished engineer and patent attorney in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Joan is survived by her mother, Jean Langenbrunner; her three sisters, Mary, Janet, and Susan, and her three brothers, Robert, Michael, and Thomas, and their families. Joan especially loved being a new grandmother to Brian's son Breccan and was looking forward to the birth of her second grandchild, and Dave's first child, due May 18th. Joan served as a nurse and case manager at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital for seventeen years and was planning to retire in October. She is said to have received hundreds of patients' letters regarding her kindness and excellent work. In addition to her work, Joan was a superb gardener and an ardent collector of beach glass, as well as heart-shaped rocks that she loved to collect on the shores of Lake Michigan. A complete list of the special people who Joan loved and cared for, for many years, would fill this page and many more. Funeral arrangements will be held at the Sheil Catholic Center, on the campus of Northwestern University, 2110 Sheridan Road, Evanston, Illinois, 60201, on Saturday, April 18. Funeral mass services will begin at 2:00 p.m., but guests may begin arriving at as early as 1:15 p.m. Parking will be available on the street. The City of Evanston has waived all parking restrictions on Orrington, Noyes, Foster, Garrett and Library Place between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Cards and flowers may be sent to the Sheil Center. We know that in her passing Joan would wish everyone a joyous life filled with great memories, kindness and love.

No words to Joan's family can express my sympathy for their loss. She was a free spirit who lit up a room when she entered it. She loved life and lived it fully. She loved her family and beamed with pride when she spoke about them . She was so excited about her grandson and a grandchild on the way . She spoke of the joy and fun she had when she spent time with her beloved mother. She was non-judgemental of others . Her infectious laughter would make me laugh everytime. I will miss you ,Dear Oleander, and hope I will live life with the same zest. There is such a hole without you . Thank you for being you.

Our condolences to all the members of the Langenbrunner family, especially Mary, Tom and Sue who we have known for many years. Joan was a lovely person. Though we did not know her well, Joan was always a joy to be around. Jeannette and Dave

Although I only worked with Joan a couple years, I felt as though I had always known here right from the start. She was such a warm, happy, person. always willing to help me out. She was so intelligent, and such a great leader. It was easy to see why many looked up to her. I will miss seeing her smiling face, and can only imagine the loss for her children and family. I know how much her friends and colleagues already miss her. Joan, please rest in peace. You are a wonderful nurse, mother, and friend that touched many peoples lives. You are so missed already. XO

Dear Brian, Jim and family - I will never forget the joy I felt each time I would bring Dan over for a visit to the house in Rogers Park. I loved the great friendship Brian and Dan had and I also loved the opportunity to visit each time with Joan. We had so many wonderful chats. Her smile, cheerfulness and kindness are memories that I will cherish always. Fondly, Maureen Lawler & Family

We always looked forward to seeing Joan when she came back to Cincinnati. She went on trips with us and would do events with us and added her laughter and comments. Her outlook was so positive, I remember her telling us about her lucky jar where she put all the good things that happened to her that day into a special place. I realized when you do this that your whole outlook changes. Thanks To Joan who always brought laughter and an impish smile with her.We miss you.

Joan is a 40+ year friend, through nursing school to living together in Chicago,
through Amanda/David/Brian and beyond. I am filled with disbelief and deep sadness.
Mom Langenbrunner, Amanda, David, Brian, Denis, and all of Joan's current friends I share your grief.
Please accept my deepest condolences. I will not be in Chicago to celebrate Joan's life, but I cherish the
good memories and will search for that sea glass at the beach. Hugs to all of you. Rob (Gutzwiller) Lodi
