Jay Brouthers Obituary

Jay Marvin
Brouthers, 85, of Houston, TX passed away on Sunday, May 26th, 2013.
Jay was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended the University of Ohio after his service in the United States Coast Guard. It was here that Jay met and married Carolyn Stern who was a devoted mother to their four sons. For eleven years Jay enjoyed teaching math, physics and chemistry at West Tech High in Cleveland. He then began a successful, 60 year career in the insurance business.
In 1979, he met and later married Betty Kuhn Brouthers and they enjoyed golfing, traveling, dancing and family get togethers for over 30 years. Together with his longtime buddies, Lewis Raymer, David Foss and Owen Johnson, Jay enjoyed many years of golf at Inwood Forest Golf Club in Houston.
Jay is predeceased by his first wife Carolyn Stern Brouthers, his parents Michael and Lillian Brouthers, and his sister Vivian Scully. Survivors include his sons Lance Brouthers of Atlanta, GA, Keith Brouthers of London, England, Scott and Nancy Brouthers of North Carolina, and Michael and Karla Brouthers of Colorado. He is also survived by his step-children Marsha and Tommy Williams of the Woodlands, TX, Jeff and Cynthia Kuhn, Diane and Brent Rager and Sharon Kuhn of Houston, TX. Survivors also include his 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild who brought much joy to his life.
The family would like to thank the many staff members at The Forum of Memorial Woods, Odyssey Hospice and Access Personal Care Home for the care and kindness they showed Jay. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Interfaith Care Partners (701 N. Post Oak Road, Suite 330 Houston, TX 77024); a volunteer organization that sponsors the Gathering Place for people with Alzheimer's which greatly enriched Jay's last few years.
The Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, June 1st at St. Luke's United Methodist Church (3471 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX) in the Chapel. There will be a reception immediately following in the Hines Baker room at St. Luke's.
Jay's life was filled music and kindness to all.

I am sorry to hear about Jay's passing. Like Ralph, I met him many years ago (1980) when I first moved to Houston and lived next to Keith. My sympathy to all the family.

To Keith and all the Brouthers' brothers and family: Sorry to hear about the death of your dad. He was a great guy and I have fond memories of him when I first arrived in Houston a million years ago. Take care.
