Succinctly- just one great lady

My most sincere sympathy for the loss of Miss Turney. She was my music teacher at Robinson school in the 70's and I so often refer to her - she made quite an impression. I was in awe of her opera singing and piano playing and felt so grown up when she taught us the 'hip' songs of the day. She was beautiful, talented and kind and I so wish I had the opportunity to tell her how much I enjoyed the time with her at Robinson. I can't hear 'Killing Me Softly' without thinking of those early days of grade school and Miss Turney. Fondest regards, Tiana Brazzale

Sincerest condolences to her family and friends. She made a positive impact on so many of her students, including me. Her encouragement and positive outlook was a source of inspiration. I still remember the song she wrote (with student input) for our graduation from Lincoln Jr. High in 1988: "So wait for awhile. Wait and see what we'll become. Look at us now, moving to the beat of a different drum. Looking back we never thought we'd be here. See the smiles on everyone you see here. Don't know where we're going. Don't know what we can do. But look at us now. We all made it through." Ms. Turney, thanks for helping us strive for our dreams and want to achieve our potential. You will be missed. To her family and friends, may her memory be a source of blessings and comfort.

I feel a tremendous loss at the passing of my former chorus/music teacher from Lincoln Jr. High (1983-85). I am so appreciative that we were reconnected, through Facebook, 2 1/2 years ago. Ms. Turney has had such a positive influence on me with regard to music that I am eternally grateful to her. I will miss her positive energy, her smile and laugh, her dedication to her students, and her passion and spirit for life, music and social justice. She has most certainly earned her wings as an Angel of Music. To all former music students of Ms. Turney, I feel the sudden urge to eat some M&Ms...(remember "Mama Makes Me Eat My M&Ms")?
My thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Turney's family at this very difficult time. May she rest in peace.
Love Always,
Keri (Gilford) Singh

Thank you for informing us of this sad news. My 13-year-old daughter, Toni Martin, was a favorite piano student of Chris' at Allegro for approx. six months, ending in Dec., 2010. "Ms. Chris" always had a smile and shared laughter with Toni. Your sweetheart was just that to Toni, encouraging her and giving her the confidence to play a well-known, six-page Mozart piece called, "Rondo" in the Christmas recital last year, which Chris was unable to attend following her eye injury. We'll never forget Chris' happy face and warm personality. We were blessed to know her. Sincerely, Sharon & Tom Martin of Bolingbrook.

Miss Turney was my junior high general music and chorus teacher at Lincoln Jr. High from 1992-1994. As I went on to study music and become a high school choir teacher, I often thought of her and wondered how she was. I'm sorry to hear of her passing, and will remember her fondly.

I think it is a credit to any teacher when she is remembered by her students. How fitting that among the first entries on Chris' page should be from some of her former students. I can only imagine what a force Chris was in the classroom based on my experience with her in the IEA. It was my privilege to have worked with Chris on the IEA Board where I saw how highly regarded she was by her colleagues and how passionate she was in her work on behalf of education employees. I'm sure she looked at this as an extension of her passion for her students. I am so thankful that our paths crossed and I will miss her. My sincere condolences to Jim and to the other members of Chris' family.

Deepest sympathy to the family. Ms. Turney taught me as probably one of her first classes at Robinson School in Lyons. I have always remembered her fondly, and have taught some of the silly songs she used to teach us to my own daughter, who is going on to college next year in Nashville...Belmont University's School of Music. I have thought of her often. She as a strong influence on me. THANK YOU MISS TURNEY!

My condolences to her family. Thanks to Ms Turney's recommendation, I was able to go to Europe in High School with her cousin. It is a trip that had a great impact on me and I have cherished it throughout my life. It would not have been possible without her. She remembered me from grade school at Washington Elementary in Lyons and recommended me to go on the trip. She was to go on the trip as well but budget cuts in the district left her without a job. Hopefully she was able to make a trip to Europe in her lifetime.
