Jan Fawcett Obituary

Fawcett, Dr. Jan

Dr. Jan Fawcett died on 5/9/22 at the age of 88 after a long health struggle. Born in Jamestown, he grew up in Hamburg, N.Y., near Buffalo. He attended the Naval Academy, then transferred to Rochester to finish college. He attended Yale Medical School, Psychiatric Residency at Rochester Associate for the Depression

Project at the National Institute of Mental Health. At 38, he became one of the youngest people ever to Chair a Department of Psychiatry, when he went to Rush Medical College, a position he held for 30 years. He built a department with a robust research output, encouraging faculty to study anything that might improve lives. He focused on teaching residents how to think, with both the "Fawcett So What? Test" (that is, did the research help anybody), and with the "Dr. Fawcett was Wrong Award" for finding research contradicting something he taught them. His research focused mostly on improving treatment of resistant depression and prevention of suicide, frequently commenting that "one good experiment is worth a thousand expert opinions". He never gave up on a patient, always knowing we can do better. He authored many papers, book chapters, books received numerous awards and honors. One that meant the most to him was from what is now known as the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance-the Jan Fawcett Humanitarian Award. He is survived by his wife of over 30 years. Katie Busch, M.D; his children Robin Fawcett, Holly Fawcett and her husband Bill Taylor, Marc Fawcett and Andrea Fawcett; his grandchildren- Jessica Fawcett Patel, Brittany Fawcett, Jameson and Marshall Ghalioungui; his sister and brother- in-law- Gretchen and Terrence McCulle; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his son Craig who died in 2007. He loved them all deeply, and will be greatly missed.

Dr Fawcett was my instructor for psych at RUSH. Decades later his lecture stands out in my mind. I am sure I passed my psych boards because of his teachings. His attitude to psch patients was ever present. the pharmacology for GABA and serotonin transmiters still stands in my mind as a basis for neurotransmitters. all the case studies he used for psych patients. Most importantly, his attitude adressing psych patients. I interacted with him for patients with psych patients and he was kind. For years I followed studies he published. I am happy to see he lives a long life. He made a differenc in countless lives.

Dear Katie, Jan saved me literally when my mom begged him to accept me for a patient 42 years ago. I´ve always had a special place in my heart for him. You two had us over in 2006 after my mom passed away. You took us to an amazing restaurant & we´re both so gracious. Please know that I would not have been as fortunate to live the life I had without Dr Fawcett. Please know the impact that he had on peoples lives. We share your loss and our best to you and your family.

I was best friends with Craig during our preteen years. Jan and the whole Fawcett family treated me as an extended family member, took me along on vacations to lake Geneva and were very inclusive of me. I´ll always remember Mr. Fawcett as an incredibly kind, generous and even tempered human who I´ve remembered all these years and will continue to do so
My sincere condolences to the family for their loss.

Jan is the role model thought leader in Psychiatry. He has mentored several recognized clinicians. His research and patient care is the most exceptional. His persona is always that of a gentle and respectful clinician. He has a participatory management style as a chairman of Psychiatry. He fostered clinical collaboration within his department . Coauthoring an article with him was seamless. We will always miss his presence. Robert and Diana Barkin family

I met Dr. Fawcett in 1990. I was referred to him by a family friend when I moved to Chicago after college. He treated me so well. His methods and personality were amazing. I was the only kid with a SAAD light machine in Lincoln Park! He truly changed my life and allowed me to graduate from law school and make a difference in my community, something he did for countless others in such a professional and humble way. Thank you. My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family for such a loss.

Jan was always very special to me. We spent many good times at our home in Renton and New Kensington as well as Hamburg. I rarely saw him after we became adults but he held a warm spot in this cousin´s heart. Katie, and family, my heart now aches for each of you.

Dr. Jan was always ready to help even when he himself needed a hand. He was a gentle, amazing person and always had such a great smile. He will be missed. (former Kingston employee)
