I feel terrible at learning about Jim's passing. An out-of-town business trip prevents me from being there for his memorial service.
I've wanted to dabble in ham radio since I was a kid but just never got around to it. I spoke with Jim about a year ago, re-connecting 30 years after his LAPD retirement.
He offered to show me the ropes. Alas, I waited too long, now he's gone and so are my dreams of learning under Jim.
Jim was a great homicide investigator and I got to know him as a young police reporter. He and his partner, Norm Ryan were as tough as nails on the outside, because they had an ugly job to do, but deep down, they were great really genuine, great guys.
I got to know Jim when I became involved in a murder case because I stumbled onto the suspect as he fled the scene of the crime. My involvement led to the suspect's arrest, and as the investigation unfolded, I was a bit frightened of the tall detective with the bushy mustache and booming voice, Jim Pitman.
At one particular difficult moment, after a very tough interrogation, Jim walked out of the room and must have seen the look of shock or surprise on my face. He winked, despite still having a scowl on his face, but it was enough to tell me everything was okay for me. There were times when he had to show his toughness and then there was every other moment in life when he was Jim Pitman, the regular guy.
When the good Lord greets him at Heaven's gate, he will look over Jim's life of service to the community as a cop and homicide investigator, the joy he experienced with ham radio, and how he shared that passion with others, and Jim will get a choice spot in the landscape of eternity!
I just wish I'd followed through on his offer to help me get into ham radio. And I sure wish I'd been able to honor his life at his memorial service today at Green Hills.
God bless Jim and his family at this final "End of Watch".

Jim was a kindhearted and gentle man. To some, he was a friend, a mentor, or a kind face to the public. He was all of that for me, Jim was my very first "elmer." (Amateur Radio Operator mentor) I will never forget the things Jim did for me, as a influential role model. I hope the Pitman family my deepest condolences. --... ...--

I’m so very saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. My experiences with Jim & Beverly are from 30+ years ago, but I remember two wonderfully sweet, devoted, kind and warm people. Jim was always willing to encourage me and others in the pursuit of amateur radio and I remember chatting with him many times on 2 meters. Beverly, please know that I and my family will be praying for you and all those who are grieving. I will always very fondly remember Jim.
May God’s peace and blessings comfort you.
