Harrington, Jr., PhD., James T.
It is with great sadness that we share the untimely and tragic passing of Dr. James T. Harrington, Jr. PhD. of Chicago, Illinois (formerly of Winnetka). Jim was born June 2, 1967 in South Bend, Indiana, and he died peacefully, surrounded by love and his family on October 29, 2021 from injuries sustained from an accident at home. His family is grateful for the compassionate and gentle care he received at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois and for the kindness of the care team. Beloved son of James and Roseanne Harrington of Winnetka, Illinois, devoted brother of Maris Harrington Tallentire of Glencoe and Hinsdale, loving uncle to his nieces and nephews - Emma Zajdela, Matthias Zajdela, Timothy Zajdela, and Sophie Zajdela, Jim was a loving cat Dad to Merry and Pippin. He is preceded in death by his sister, Roseanne E. Harrington; uncle, Frank Strupeck; and grandparents, John and Rita Harrington and Frank and Louise Strupeck. Jim was a dedicated teacher, neighbor, friend, and colleague. James Harrington, PhD, joined Loyola University Chicago Department of Philosophy as an Instructor in Fall 2006 and became a full time faculty member in 2008. He rose through the ranks, and at the time of his death was a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy. Quirky and convivial, he was loved by both students and colleagues. His scholarship culminated in a book, Time: A Philosophical Introduction, published in 2015. In addition to serving as an excellent teacher and mentor, Dr. Harrington had served the Department for several years as the Undergraduate Program Director. He then served as a member of the Academic Council of the College of Arts and Sciences; and at the time of his death he was serving as Chairperson of Academic Council. Jim received a PhD in Philosophy from The University of Illinois at Chicago and a BA and BS from the University of Notre Dame where he was a member of the band. Jim was a class of 1985 graduate of Loyola Academy, Wilmette, Illinois. In addition to his academic work, Jim was committed to helping those living with addiction and supporting their recovery. Jim was a brilliant intellectual with wide ranging interests in addition to his concentration in Philosophy. He was a font of knowledge of all things and would find any occasion to speak about his love of fantasy, books, and board games. Even more importantly to him and his family is that he was a kind and loving person. He will be remembered for his love of the White Sox, strong opinions, and generosity. He lived a full life of service to others. Jim will be sorely missed.
