My friendship with Father James goes back to 1980 when I was new to Chicago and he was serving at Holy Trinity Cathedral.
I was, and still am, a conservative evangelical Christian but was interested in the insights of Orthodoxy. Father James gave some very insightful talks at the cathedral and I also visited services there quite often. I appreciated not just his homilies and lectures, but the opportunity to know him personally. I came to move near the Cathedral and often if I were walking to a nearby diner for food or coffee would knock on the rectory door and invite him to come along.
Our conversations would vary from profound to just relaxing and exchanging stories and jokes of the day but were always positive and refreshing.
When Father James moved to Hyde Park we kept in touch and exchanged Christmas cards every year and once or twice a year (sometimes less) I would look him up. Sometimes we would do like old times and go for a meal, and often he just enjoyed a long car ride.
As a student of the word, I appreciate that I could ask him off the cuff about difficult passages and he could answer on the spur of the moment adding his linguistic skills and his knowledge of various interpretations of passages. Although from different outlooks we could "agree to disagree" and neither of us seeking to win an argument or change the others opinion. And, as I mentioned earlier, it was fun just to get his perspective on affairs of the day and all kinds of mundane subjects.
I will miss my good friend! But I know till we meet again He is in good hands; the hands that were nailed to the cross for our redemption and from which no one can ever pluck us

Father Doyle was an exceptional priest! We belong to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Hammond, In. We met Father Doyle at the festivals who greeted us with open arms! He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed! Our prayers are with the congregation as well as with his family! May his memory be eternal! The Avgerinos Family

Fr. Doyle, it was indeed a pleasure to have known you and worked with you during my time in Hegewisch. Our ecumenical ministry to the Community was itself a most fulfilling spiritual blessing. We will miss your smile and friendship along with your stories of your experiences in the Church. The Community has lost a great leader and friend. "Rest In Peace"
