James Burgess Obituary


KEELING, Va. - James Thomas Burgess, 76, of 6004 Slatesville Road, Keeling, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 9, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Herman Beach Burgess and the late Sudie Myers Burgess.

He worked as a timber buyer-cruiser for Valley Log Company. He was a member of Keeling Baptist Church.

He married Rebecca Ferguson Burgess on April 17, 1948. She predeceased him on Jan. 2, 2001.

He is survived by three sons, Malcolm T. Burgess of Callands, Lester J. Burgess of Callands and Wayne E. Burgess of Nathalie; a brother, Julian Burgess of Danville; a sister, Inez Burgess of Danville; two daughters, Dianne B. Oswald of Java and Marie B. Hawker of Keeling; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, William R. Burgess.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel in Danville with the Rev. Tom Bailey and Mr. James Holmes officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of Marie Hawker, 16832 Old Richmond Road, Keeling.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Keeling Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 12, Keeling, VA 24566.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

My heart goes out to the family during this time of great lost. While growing up Mr. Burgess always welcome the young children into his home to share in work and play. Some of my best times was with this family.
