No one here would know me, but I knew Ira in 1969 when we were in ACL (NCO School) at Fort Sill, OK. We both left there in Dec. 70 and were assigned to different units in Vietnam. I never saw him again...and I wish I had. He was a friend when I needed one, always funny and upbeat and a good soldier. I am old now, will turn 77 in a month and I think a lot about the guys I served with, both in the U.S. and in 'Nam. I am sorry for his family and I wish you all well. May he rest in peace. Dear Shive Family,

We were also neighbors of the Shive family. In fact, your grandpa Shive and my dad grew up near each other in Kentucky!

My grandma owned "Jessie's Store" kiddy corner from your grandma and grandpa's house. Your dad hung around with my cousins and was older than me, but I always thought he was so handsome!

He was always a nice guy, too. Always said hi to little Debbie from across the street! Our family was so saddened to hear of his loss and we want you to know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. May God Bless you at this difficult time.

Best regards,

Debbie (Clemmons) Drews and family

Ira and Morgan:
I am so sorry to hear of your loss.
May God help you thru this difficult time.
I knew your Dad from childhood thru the birth of the two of you. He was very proud of both of you.
I can remember him riding his new bike as a child and driving his corvette after his return from the service.
We lived on the same block until I married and moved away.
May memories of happier days get you thru this difficult time.

To Ira’s family,

It is always hard to know what to say at times like these.

Know that all of us that knew Ira enjoyed having him as a part of our lives. I ,along with many others, had the very good fortune to know and work with Ira at Union Carbide/Viskase. He was always one of the first to lend a hand or to help a relative newcomer like myself to understand how things “worked”. But perhaps more important than the way that he approached his work was the way that he treated the people that he worked with. Underneath what to some might have appeared to be a gruff exterior was a true and kind heart. You knew that Ira cared about the people that he worked with each day by the way that he greeted them and joked with them and by the way that he was respected and liked by each of those that were lucky enough to know him.

I would not suggest that I can tell you the measure of a man, but I believe that at least a part of it should be the joy that one brings to those that are around him. By this measure I would suggest that Ira was quite a man. I only knew him from work and the occasional exchange at Café Rene before work. I can only imagine from these brief interactions, that he must have brought great joy to his family and friends outside of work also. May the fact that Ira made this world a better place to live in, for those around him, help to soften the blow of his loss.

I can only hope for you that eventually the void that his departure from this world left in your heart will be filled by the good memories that he made together with you. While you are on this journey, know that all of us that knew Ira will miss him and that our prayers will be with you and him.

Respectfully,
One of many co-workers that were blessed to know Ira

Ira III & family

I am so sorry to hear that your father has passed away. My name is Wendy and I lived at 5707 down the street from your dad and went to grammar school and high school with him. Always a gentlaman. I have fond memories walking to Nathan Hale school with all the kids on the block and how your grandmother Shive used to have to coax him out from under his bed with a switch from the back yard to get him to get ready for school. As we grew older we always laughed about that. He will be missed. He was a good childhood friend and even after I moved to Kansas we would still see each other when I visited my parents at their home. I pray that you ifnd comfort and know that I am praying for you and your family .
