Hugh Short Obituary

Short, Hugh rarely turned off his two-way Motorola radio. He always kept his finger on the pulse of all things occurring with the CTA buses out of the 77th Street Garage. The man known throughout CTA as "K106" has made his transition. Hugh started his career at the CTA in 1960 as a bus operator. He soon began his ascension through the ranks, retiring as General Manager, 77th Street Garage. During his 37 years at CTA, he became legendary for his transportation knowledge. He played a major role in coordinating the transport of hundreds of thousands of people coming into and exiting the Chicago Loop during the Taste of Chicago and the now famous, July 3rd fireworks. Greater than his knowledge of transportation however, was his passion to ensure that all riders of CTA buses experienced the best customer service possible. He traveled to Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands to study their transit systems and the impact of traffic-light pre-emption. He retired from CTA in January, 1998 and pursued his other passion of cosmetology. Hugh was born October 21, 1934 in Liberty, Mississippi, the first of seven children. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Upon discharge he, along with is new wife, moved to Chicago. He attended Wilson College, and later McCoy College, various cosmetology schools, including Pivot Point, graduating in 1975. Hugh passed from this life on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 of complications from prostate cancer. Hugh was 74. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Gloria, his daughters Jetaun and Wendy, son, Hugh, his mother, Sylvannah Gore, three grandchildren and a host of family and friends. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. on March 3rd at A.R Leak Funeral Home, 7838 S. Cottage Grove. The wake and funeral will take place on Wednesday, March 4th at 10 a.m. at Trinity United Church of God in Christ, 400 W. 95th Street. For further info call 708-206-0860.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the Family and friends of my long time friend, Hugh Short. Hugh was an original, his word was his bond, he looked a person in the eye and if he gave his word he kept his word. A virture that's becoming rare. Rest in Peace my friend.

Weeping may endure for the night but joy will come in the morning”

It is with a great sense of mixed emotions that I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Hugh Short.

It is normal to be filled with sadness and mourn the loss of a great humanitarian, and a wonderful and cheerful human being. But we also celebrate his terrific life and his enduring legacy as a person who can only be described as a community treasure.

I met Hugh when he used to do my mother's hair. Always a friendly, happy and very giving person.
He also was a great collector of fine automobiles. He IS blessed with friends and family that smile when they think of him.

Hugh brought sunshine into every life he touched. I last saw Hugh when he unfailingly delivered his birthday gift to my mother in late October. We exchanged a big hug and lots of laughter. We will miss him greatly.

Condolenses to the entire family. I know Mr. Short from his working at the Crawford's Hair Salon. He was always a great guy and you "didn't mess with ANY of Mr. Shorts stuff", or there would be hell to pay.

Be at peace, he is in a better place, no suffering, no pain. Know that God never makes a mistake.
