My brother, a De Paul grad. & B Ball player called me today to tell me of Hershey's death...I played with him at Von Steuben...as I was mostly on the bench I had a perfect view of his magical ability on the court...indeed, he was the first "Magic"...I also remember those summers when he worked at Riverview practicing his under handed free throws when there were no paying custumers! My condolences to his family.

I grew up down the street from Mr. Carl and was part of his childrens life (Adam & Josh) through the school years. He was a kind man and always made time for his family and to play ball with all the kids. The Carl home was always a warm place. My best wishes to the whole family and friends.

To the Carl Family, I have fond memories of Howie from seeing him play at DePaul to our later years with Windy City Seniors. He was not only a great player but a joy to be with. I know the last few years were hard on all, but the mark he left can not be forgotten. I was at the game that he scored 43 and as Coach Ray later said if the 3 point rule was in, he would have had over 50. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

What more can one say about the Legend. Being a Huge Depaul fan, I always looked forward to being around this idol, but what I learned from the many years of being around via the family was that the Legend was not the 5-9 Jewish Basketball Star but rather who he was as a person and what values he taught and acted out each minute of his life. It was a privlidge and honor to think of him as a father figure. Amazing how I never EVER saw him without a glowing smile on his face, even during his hardest battles with his illnesses. Coming out again this Summer to Hoop for Hope inspired us all. A legend he was and will forever be. I only hope and wish I can live my life the way he did with such honor and dignity. My sincere condolences to the whole Carl family. I know he is in a better place and smiling again as we speak. You will be dearly missed but NEVER forgotten.

I saw Hershey Carl play when he was at Von Stueben and later at DePaul. He was a magician on the basketball court. He usually beat my team at Roosevelt High School in Chicago. In his last game against Roosevelt he made a shot from 2/3 the length of the court as the first half ended. He only scored 40 points in that game. He was my Michael Jordan during the late 1950s. RIP.

To all the Carl's,
I had known Hershey since I was a little boy learning how to play baketball at Eugene Field courts. I watched Hershey grow up at Von and become the best baketball player in the City. I remember Hershey along with my brother Harvey winning the city chapionship in 1955. He was the BEST!
He'll be missed by all but never forgotten!

Just heard about Howie from Mom and Esther. I remember my 'big' cousin well. Between Howie's playing for DePaul and my brother, Stuart's passion for basketball, I became a life long fan of the game. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.

Despite being more of a contemporary of Sam's I vividly recall, while playing at the outdoor (Field Park) court with the "big kids," watching little Hershey all alone at the other court giving true meaning to the terms: "practice, practice, practice." It sure paid off and he certainly was one of the great "Catholic" (DePaul) All-Americans. My most sincere condolensces on your loss.

I am ten years younger but as jewish kid who loved basketball and living on the north side, I remember Howie Carl. I watched him play and later had the pleasure to meet him and his son in a clothing store. He truly was very nice to me as we discussed north side basketball. I am truly sorry for his entire family and may his memory always bring comfort to his family.
Again, my deepest condolences.

HOWIE MADE YOU FEEL SPECIAL JUST TO BE WITH HIM. I ENVIED HIS ABILITIES AS AN ATHLET IN OUR YOUTH AND AGAIN WHEN HE WAS AT HIS SICKEST FOR HIS UNBLINKING ATTITUDE, SENCE OF HUMOR AND HIS ABILITY TO MADE YOU FEEL HUMBLE IN HIS PRESENCE. HE WAS SO EASY TO BE WITH AND SO APPROACHABLE. AFTER LUNCH AT THE LAST ROOSEVELT & VON GET TOGETHER AT MAX & BENNY PEOPLE WERE WAITING FOR THE CHANCE TO SAY HELLO TO HIM. AS A KID WATCHING HIM PLAY I WAS IN AWE WHEN HE SCORED 44 POINTS AGAINST ROOSEVELT, AT HIS CONFIDENCE IN HIMSELF, AT THE EASE IN TEASING US, AT HIS EASY SMILE. HE WAS A MAN'S MAN.
AT THE END HE WAS MORTAL AND WE'LL MISS HIM BUT WE'LL BE BETTER FOR HAVING KNOWN HIM AND WE'LL TALK ABOUT HIM FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES....OUR CONDOLENCES TO HIS FAMILY, WITH OUR LOVE HOWIE & TOBY GLANTZ
