Guy Zimmerman Obituary

Lieutenant Colonel Guy Gail Zimmerman was born May 9, 1938, at Watonga, Oklahoma to Glen and Edith Zimmerman and passed away in Oklahoma City, Saturday May 8, 2004 at the age of 65. He grew up in Watonga, Oklahoma, and graduated from Watonga High School, the University of Oklahoma with a degree in mathematics and The George Washington University, Washington, DC with a Master's of Science in Business Administration. Commissioned from ROTC in 1962 in the Army Field Artillery he served tours at Ft Leonard Wood, MO, the Pentagon with the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Izmir, Turkey with NATO's Headquarters, Land South East and two assignments in Viet Nam first as an advisor to a Vietnamese Artillery Battalion and then as an operations staff officer with HQ, US Army Vietnam. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Defense Systems Management College at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He served at Fort Sill Oklahoma, as Commander of Battery A, 2rd Battalion, 2nd Field Artillery; Commander of Battety A, 3rd Battalion, 9th Field Artillery; Instructor of Artillery Tactics in the Field Artillery School and as Battalion Commander of the Staff and Faculty Battalion. Twice he served as Deputy Commander of the Army Tactical Data Systems at Fort Sill. He was awarded the Bronze Star with one Oak Leak Cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnamese Honor Medal First Class, Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Service Medal, and numerous campaign medals. Prior to his military service he taught mathematics at Central High School in Oklahoma City. Following his military service he taught computer science and Mathematics at Watonga High School in Watonga, Western Heights Junior High School and Crooked Oak High School in Oklahoma City. He was a member of the Oklahoma City New Covenant Christian Church, Disabled American Veterans, Retired Officers Association and Oklahoma Education Association. He devoted his life to his God, family, soldiers and students. He married Ginger Sawyer on September 10, 1960, at Watonga, and to this happy union was born one son. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and one sister, Lorene Karns. He is survived by his wife Ginger Zimmerman of the home, one son, Gary Zimmerman and wife Bonnie of The Colony, Texas, one sister, Georgia Benham and husband Gerald of Sun City, Arizona, brother in law, Dr. Donald Karns and wife Sharon, Enid, Oklahoma and numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral Services for Guy Zimmerman will be held Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at 10:00 A.M. at The New Covenant Christian Church in OKC with Rev. Tim Pool officiating. Burial will be held in the IOOF Cemetery at Watonga. In Lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4323 NW 63rd, OKC, OK 73116.

Ginger: I'm so sorry for your loss. Butch, as I knew him, was always a fun person to be around, and so were you, so I thought it great that you were together. I'm sorry you've been thru a fight with cancer, and glad that he's now at peace. I'd love to hear from you. Barbara (Young) Moses

"Butch" and Ginger are among our favorite memories of younger days.

We always looked forward to seeing both at reunions. "Butch" will be missed by many, many people. He always brought a smile and a good attitude to anything he was involved in. Our thoughts are with Ginger now.
