Gurrie Rhoads Obituary

Think about Gurrie often. A few weeks before he died we talked about a historical project I was involved in. He said he would have loved to contribute to it. I wish he could have. God bless Gurrie. I will miss him always. Love, his baby sister, Cheryl (In photo, Gurrie is holding me when I was a toddler), as we stand with our dad, Herb Rhoads and siblings, Kathleen, Paul, Virginia and Mark in the front.

Please forgive this tardy note. I was redoing family history for my niece and the written portion contains several references to Gurrie so I checked googol to see any updates.

Please accept my belated sympathies on the loss of a wonderful man who we referred to as the Gurrie Genius.

The last time I saw Gurrie was several years ago when Cappie Smith and I returned to 428 and we had lunch with him, He was very gracious and we shared many fond memories.

His ancestral documents are still treasured in the family file on the Gurries, Smiths and Eichhorns.

I hope the sting of his graduation has been somewhat subdued but memories of the Gurrie Genius remain.

I think of Gurrie often. I know he loved the I'M NOT ARGUING SHIRT that I got him a few years ago. I am so grateful for my big brother's life. I will miss him always. May he rest in peace.

I just learned today that Gurrie passed away. I extend my sincere condolences to Alice and family.

There will be times I hear your whisper when we speak of the past, of history, of ancestors. That matter-of-fact voice. The clarity of your thinking. Your willingness to share your history. The beauty of your life wisped away until we meet again. Godspeed, my friend.

To the Rhoads family, my deep condolences and sympathy for the passing of your father. Always found calmness for the day and energy for the future at the Rhoads home on Central Avenue.

My heart goes out to the family. Gurrie was a great guy to work for and a wonderful mentor to learn from. I have plenty of fond memories of the fun summer days.

My sincere and heartfelt sympathy is extended to Alice and to the Rhoads family. I have been friends with Alice since high school and with Gurrie for more than thirty years. There are cherished memories of time spent with Gurrie and Alice - wonderful conversations, great dinners and, most importantly, a treasured friendship.

ALSO- Gurrie was a 1954 graduate of Lyons Township High School in La Grange and a 1958 graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and a captain in the Army Reserve after a period of active duty.
