Gregory Adamski Obituary

Adamski, Gregory A. noted civil and criminal defense attorney, died February 14 in his Chicago home at the age of 62. Greg and his wife and law partner, Karen Conti, hosted "Legally Speaking" on Sunday nights on WGN AM 720, discussing and debating legal issues in the news and fielding listeners' legal questions. Since 1990, Adamski and Conti were founding and managing partners in the Chicago law firm of Adamski & Conti LLC and taught at the University of Illinois College of Law. Greg was born on October 14, 1948 in Marquette Park. He received a bachelor's and Master's degree from Xavier University and a law degree from Catholic University of America Law School in Washington where he was a law review editor. After serving as a law clerk of U.S. District Court Judge Richard B. Austin, he joined Winston & Strawn where he became a partner and developed the firm's first pro bono program. Throughout nearly 40 years as an attorney, Greg tried hundreds of trials and argued more than 60 appeals including one in the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the Cook County Democratic Party. In the 1990's, Mr. Adamski represented serial killer John Wayne Gacy in the last set of his death row appeals. In 2001, he received the first Elmer Gertz Award from the Illinois Bar Association for representing the poor and advocating civil rights. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his radio show on WGN and on other stations through the years. "Greg was a lawyer's lawyer," said his wife, Karen. "He absolutely loved the fight, the law, and his clients. He was the one you wanted in your corner as a lawyer, a friend, and a husband." According to Scott Szala, a partner of Greg's from his Winston & Strawn days, "Greg had a passion for life, the law, history, baseball, radio, and most importantly, Karen. He and Karen demonstrated that a couple can have a successful marriage and law practice. For those people that knew him, their lives were enriched." Besides his wife, Mr. Adamski is survived by his mother, Catherine Bandurski, siblings Mary Sue Thomas, Richard Adams and Michael Adamski, and his son Rik. The memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Union League Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chicago Tribune Neediest Kids Fund.

Rest In Peace. I worked for Greg briefly, he was so happy when I taught him some Word moves on the computer. His eyes showed when he really liked you. When another lawyer told him to correct me one time, you could see he didn´t feel like doing it because he knew it was petty. Rest In Peace sir and condolences to your son.

Ms. Conti. I was at Catholic University Law School with Greg. During my final year there several of us went to a Bar Association meeting in Chicago. Greg was, I believe, clerking for Judge Austin and we met with him at the Judge's chambers. Greg couldn't have been more generous with his time or his smile. He talked to us about the law and our places in the law and in the world and how he was convinced that "balance" between "life" and "law" was possible and necessary. I have never forgotten that day. I am sorry for your loss and for the loss of everyone who met Greg even once.

Karen,
I was shocked with disbelief in hearing of Greg’s untimely passing. Since I first met Greg some 20 years ago, there was an immediate connection with this giant of a man. While the early years were rooted in a professional relationship, it was our annual telephone calls in the later years that reflected the depth of our friendship. I will miss him. His wit of trivia and intelligence of the facts, when combined with his delivery, made him an excellent public speaker, a formidable foe and just a cool guy to be with, in any environment. I respected his work ethic and dedication and admired the partnership that the two of you shared, both in and out of the office. I am happy to say that I am a better person for having known Greg and sincerely believe that our world is a better place that he leaves behind because he was here and lived life to the fullest. You are in my thoughts and prayers, God Bless.

I was so saddened to hear of your loss by Greg's death. Greg was my late husband's best friend at Catholic U and the best man at our wedding in Rochester, NY in 1972. I have many wonderful memories of those law school days. When my husband passed away in 1985 he somehow found me and called me. We had a long conversation that was a great comfort to me. He was the best of friends.

Sorry about the passing of Greg Adamski; I worked for him briefly in the 90s, before he married. He was very nice and appreciative of my computer skills. And he also had a smile on his face. May he rest in peace

Dear Karen,
I sat behind Greg at Ignatius in Latin. (He was incredibly resourceful in creation and placement of "ponies" to aid in his translations.) He invited me for a weekend at his summer place in Indiana. I have been away from Chicago for thirty plus years and when I contacted him a couple of years ago he told me how he couldn't believe how lucky he was to have you as his partner--in marriage. He was larger than life. My most heartfelt sympathies.
