Grace Lavinder Obituary

DANVILLE, Va. - Grace Cheek Lavinder, 85, formerly of 5 Schoolfield Drive, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had resided since Nov. 2000.

Born May 13, 1919, in Mecklenburg Co., Va., she was the daughter of the late Charlie Cheek and Irene Church Cheek.

She lived most of her life in Danville where she was a very active member of Schoolfield Baptist Church until a decline in health. She had worked at Dan River, Inc.

She was married to Samuel Fred Lavinder, who died July 2, 1994.

She is survived by four sons, Danny Lavinder, Mike Lavinder, Randy Lavinder and Bill Lavinder, all of Danville; two brothers, W. F. Cheek of Halifax and Richard Cheek of Scottsburg; three sisters, Ruth Earles of Danville, Inez Hogan of Halifax and Marie Snead of Newport News; and 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by two brothers, C. C. Cheek and William Cheek; and a sister, Garnett Womack.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of Bill Lavinder, 1905 Rainbow Circle, off of Mt. Cross Road.
