Gladys Herkner Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Gladys P. Herkner, 96, died Saturday, Feb. 23, at her home, peacefully, with her family by her side.

Gladys, "Meemo" to her family and friends, was born Feb. 12, 1912, to Arthur and Adeline (Furby) North. She was born and raised, and died after 96 years, on the Farm in Long Lake Twp., which will be dedicated as a Centennial Farm on March 8, 2008. Gladys enjoyed working on the Farm, and as a teenager also cooked for The Fletcher Resort on Long Lake. She married Vincent Herkner on Sept. 30, 1931, in Traverse City.

Gladys loved her garden, watching the orioles and hummingbirds, and cooking for her family.

Gladys is survived by her daughters, Annette (Edward) Hardy, Laurene (Ron) Barnes and Betty Hardy, all of Traverse City. She also leaves five grandchildren, Lori (John) Kwasky, Jim (Kathy) Hardy, Brad Hardy, Kelly (Garry) Lemcool, Kevin (Yolanda) Barnes; seven great-grandchildren, Jason Kwasky, Suzanne and Jacqueline Hardy, Jason and Megan Lemcool, Rebekah and Beth Barnes; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Swanson and Beatrice Lautner; brother-in-law, Leo Herkner; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Gladys was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Herkner; her brothers, Orle, Guy, Walter and Carl North; and her son-in-law, Dave Hardy.

Visitation will take place Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Marvin Rosa officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Raymond Bohrer, Dr. Richard Kosinski, and Munson Hospice — especially Heidi and Lynn — for their loving home care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be directed to Munson Hospice.

Lori, John and members of Mrs. Herkner's family: I wanted to tell you how sorry I was about the loss of your grandmother and mother. I first knew Mr. and Mrs. Herkner when they came into Mr. McDermott's insurance office and I worked there as a young girl. They were always smiling, always so polite, quiet spoken and fun to talk to. They seemed to be so much in love with each other and so content with their lives. What an example for others. I'm sure you all have wonderful memories from such fine people. My thoughts are with you.

Dear Friends:
We were saddened to learn of Meemo's death and know that she is more comfortable now than her last days. We remember so many times that we enjoyed chatting with her and the fact that she always had a smile no matter how she felt. She will be missed.
