Fred was born in Leland on Dec. 14, 1934, to Leonard and Agnes (Korson) Egeler. On Nov. 6, 1976, Fred married the former Pennie Oberg in Traverse City.
Fred served his country as a master sergeant in the United States Air Force, with active duty during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Fred continued with the Air Force for over 20 years until his retirement in 1973.
After retirement, Fred refused to slow down, working as a school bus driver and later with Great Northwest Tour and Travel.
He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, the Eagles, American Legion and an active member of Cherryland VFW Post 2780, where he served as past Quarter Master.
In earlier years, Fred could often be found on a snowmobile, which led to his involvement with the Michigan Snowmobile Association, as well as his help in initiating many of the trails in East Bay Township and the Snow Spiders.
Fred enjoyed playing and watching golf and was a big fan of the Detroit Pistons and our own Traverse City Beach Bums. Through it all, Fred loved spending time with his family and friends, enjoying a good meal and drink at Peegeo's.
Fred is survived by his wife, Pennie; daughters, Lorraine Goff and Denise (David) Arbuckle, both of Hot Springs, Ark., and Juli (Mike) VanPelt of Traverse City; sons, Frank Egeler of Escanaba and Chris (Deb) Egeler of Interlochen; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barb (Darryl) Rose and Betty (Robert) Dault; four brothers, Robert Egeler, Alvin (Jan) Egeler, Donald (Clara) Egeler and Richard (Harriet) Egeler; many nieces and nephews; as well as many other loving family members and friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonard Egeler Jr.; and sister and brother-in-law, Beverly (Don) Haney.

We feel priviledged to have been in Freddie's life. We will miss his friendship. Even though Freddie is gone, we will still be laughing with him when we recall the many great times we've enjoyed with him. Rod would go to Freddie's garage, which he fondly refered to as his "after hours hardware store", and tip a few beers and share stories with Fred. He would always come back laughing, several times forgetting what he went to borrow!
Pennie, we are always here for you.
We love you,
Rod and Alice Koehler

We have treasured Fred's friendship and are incredibly saddened by this loss of a dear, dear friend (and sparring partner for George)! We are all so lucky to have have known and enjoyed Fred... there were always smiles and laughter in the room when Fred was in it. A very endearing trait of Fred's is that he was just as happy to poke fun at himself as at anyone or anything else.
Fred worked hard and devoted time to things he believed in. His efforts were fruitful and will continue to benefit others long after he is gone.
Pennie, know that you are in our thoughts, and call on us if you need anything at all.
Much love and sympathy,
Carol & Tom Bullamore-Neely
