Freda Moffat Obituary

The family of Freda Dawn Moffat sorrowfully announces her peaceful passing on July 17, 2003 at her home in Portage la Prairie. Respecting Mom's wishes and the health of her husband there will be a private family service and interment of the ashes at Hillside Cemetery.

Freda was born on July 30, 1925 in Portreeve, Saskatchewan. She lived there until moving with her family to Treherne, MB in 1937. In 1939 they moved to Holland, MB. She attended Normal School in Winnipeg and she taught in Bede, MB. In 1949 she married William Robert Moffat of Rossendale, MB and they lived on the family farm until they retired to Portage in 1996.

While in Rossendale, Freda shared her talents in numerous community activities including the United Church Women, the Sunday School, the Community Club, Belles & Beaus Seniors Club and the 4-H Club. She served as a substitute teacher and also taught Kindergarten for a few years. She supported sporting events and enjoyed curling with her friends and family. Freda was an active member of Rossendale United Church and especially enjoyed decorating the Church for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

As well as taking care of her family and their home, Freda played an active role in operating the family farm. All animals, whether family pets, farm animals or strays, found a welcome spot in Freda's heart. Always ready to spend time with family and friends, Freda and Rob enjoyed playing cards, going to dances and exploring the countryside on their Sunday drives. Through the years Freda took great pleasure in playing the piano and doing crossword puzzles. Her salt and pepper collection of 1019 sets has been a source of enjoyment and conversation. Freda's wonderful sense of humor has provided much entertainment for friends and family.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years, Rob, her son, Bill and daughter-in-law, Fran and her daughter, Mary Lynn. She will also be mourned by her sister, Vera (Clarence) Sundell of Holland, in-laws Marion Vigar of Holland, Harold Finnie and Minnie McVety of Portage la Prairie. And numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great and great great nieces and nephews. Freda was happy to welcome into the family circle her step-grandchildren, Glenn and Sandra Brown, Jim and JoAnn Brown, and Rick Brown and fiancee Sandy Birrell. Being great grandmother to Shannon and Shania was a source of joy to Freda.

Freda was predeceased by her parents Vernon and Marjorie Vigar, an infant daughter, her brother, Bob Vigar, and four infant siblings.

In lieu of flowers if friends so desire donations may be made in Freda's memory to the Children's Wish Foundation, 350 St Mary Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3J2 or to Sunset Palliative Care, Box 92. Portage la Prairie, MB., R1N 3A7, or to the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter, 3062 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3K OY1.

My sympathies to Uncle Rob. I will miss my yearly "catching up" with Freda. No matter where I lived(and there were many addresses!) Aunt Freda always sent a birthday greeting and warm wishes. Her kindness will not be forgotten.

Jane and I send our sympathy to Uncle Bob, Mary Lynn, Bill and family.

Everyone in all our family always appreciated and looked forward to being remembered on birthdays and other occasions.

Freda made our family feel good at those times and whenever we saw her.

She was a "great aunt" and we will miss her!
