Mr. Olivi was a true American hero...His book, Decision at Nagasaki, is a historical treasure. My son and I met him at a book signing in Highland, Indiana. He brought history to life as he told my son about his experiences. He has also been an inspiration to my dad as he writes his own book about the 99th Bomb group. We will never forget having dinner with him at Giovanni's Restaurant in Munster!

Sorry to hear of the passing of Fred Olivi. He and my dad were good friends. Dad spoke of Fred often and always enjoyed getting together with him when possible and enjoying the Pullman Tech reunions. I had a nice "conversation" with Fred myself when he did an online chat on AOL several years ago. I know he had many friends and will be fondly remembered.

We will always treasure our trip with Fred and Carole to New Orleans for the 1984 World's Fair. Also, our dinner engagements in and around Chicago were always special treats. He's now with his beloved Carole. God's peace to both of them and thanks for those everlasting memories.

Dear Olivi Family,

I first met Fred in 2000 at a fly-in at Lewis University, where I so enjoyed speaking with him and hearing about his most famous mission. I was privileged to see him again when he came to speak at Schaumburg Airport several times after that. He was a true gentleman and will be missed by all. My prayers are with all of you in this time of sorrow.

Dear Dr. Emil Olivi,

Our deepest sympathy to you and all of Fred's family on the terrible loss you are feeling.

You may not remember me but I am the son of Isidoro Epifani who owned the Jolly Inn where Fred worked before the war. You were also the first dentist I visited when I was 5 and you convinced me to stop sucking my thumb. As a young boy I idolized Fred and eventually went into the Air Force myself, making a career out of it.

I wish I was able to attend the funeral tomorrow.

Good luck to you and the family.

To the Olivi Family:

We were sorry to read about the passing of our dear friend Fred. I served with Fred in the 343rd CTD where we both learned how to fly. Our memories of our service are mentioned in his book. We enjoyed our times together at our many reunions which Fred and Carol organized and brought toghether many of the 343rd to share our many wartime experiences. He will be missed. He was an inspiration to us all.

I knew Fred since I was the owner of Union Glass Company. We served at the same time in the military in the B-29's -- Fred in the 509th and I was in the 40th Bomb Group on Tinian. I was proud to be his friend and will miss him. My condolences to your entire family.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Fred Olivi. I have a signed picture of Major Sweeney's B-29 Bockscar crew that Fred gave me at an Armed Forces Day program at O'Hare in the 1980's. He wrote the names of each crew member on the photo. I was a B-29 crew member (CFC gunner) in the 98th Bomb Wing during the Korean War time period.

My condolences to the Olivi family.

I had enjoyed hearing Fred talk about his unique experiences during WW II on multiple occasions. Our nation has lost yet another great Veteran who fought for our freedom, and there are many today who will not forgot the sacrifices made, especially due to the talks given by Fred and others on their war experiences.

Best Wishes for all in the extended Olivi family.

My deepest condolences to Fred's family. Fred and my dad, Richard McNamara, who was the regularily assigned co-pilot of the Enola Gay, were best buddies in the war. Our family finally connected with Fred long after my dad passed away in 1984. Unfortunately by the time we all found each other and were ready for a long awaited reunion, Fred had his heart attack and the get together never happened. I regret this never happened. I can just see Fred and my dad up there reliving all those days together flying their airplanes. Whenever I look up and see a plane now, I'll think of them. What a wonderful man Fred was.

My condolences to the Olivi family. I first met Fred at the Hinsdale Art Fair a few years back when he was correcting the artist who had painted a picture (incorrectly) of a B-29 Bomber. I now am a volunteer with the Wheaton History Center and I interviewed Fred as part of our project of interviewing WWII veterans. He was a wonderful, fascinating man and I am blessed to have met him and to have gotten his oral history. We owe so much to him and others like him.
