Fred Buchthal Obituary

BUCHTHAL--Fred, 92, passed away March 20, 2009. Born December 21, 1916 in Berlin, Germany. He was a resident of Teaneck, NJ. Fred came to America from Nazi-occupied Germany in 1936 and joined the US Army to fight Hitler. He served with the 5th Tank Division during the WWII. He was a life master bridge player and an avid chess player. Fred was a long-standing member of the National Council of Jewish Women's Swim In to aid MS patients and Meals on Wheels. Fred has left this Earth a better place. He relentlessly supported the underdog, and often provided help for the unfortunate individuals who didn't have the same human rights and opportunities. He helped to publish Spartacus, when the author was blacklisted and he supported Paul Robeson's efforts with the Progressive Party in 1948. Husband to the late Esther (Goldman). Father to Ronald and (wife) Susan, Stanley and (wife) Maja, and Larry. Grandfather to David and (wife) Mary, Caryn and (husband) John, Lucas, Marina, and Anna. Brother to Claes, 96 and Chaim Tal, 90.

Dear Ronnie, Stan and Larry and families, I am so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. We lost my mom last fall. Alas, The Salem St gang of the 1950's is reuniting elsewhere. Much love to all of you. Please stay in touch,
