Eva Helwing Obituary

Helwing, Eva Age 73, nee Eifert, entered the presence of her Lord on January 10, 2012. Born December 10, 1938. Eva was born in Tab, Hungary. She was the youngest of three children and was called the "család esze," the brain of the family. During World War II, her family was forced to flee Hungary. Eva lived in Germany with her family before coming to the United States. Eva was the first principal of the Inter-American Magnet School in Chicago, where she presided from 1985-2005. During her 21 year tenure, she was recognized as an outstanding educator who won many awards and special recognitions. She was an advocate and promoter of dual language fluency and was a visionary in the development of today's popular dual language programs. She was also known to be a mentor to aspiring principals and a friend to faculty and staff alike. Among Eva's honors and recognitions are: Whitman Award for Outstanding Principals - 1996, School Leadership Award for Outstanding Principals -1997, Chicago Phi Delta Kapa Educator of the Year - 1990, Illinois State Board of Education the "Those who Excel Award" - 2003. Eva's embrace of universities and research projects resulted in her school being featured in journals such as Phi Delta Kappan, National Association for Bilingual Education and international papers such as The Financial Times and The London Times. Eva's thirst for knowledge and interesting experiences was unquenchable. She was a compelling history teacher and even after she became a principal, she remembered her first love - the rich lives of people who made history. With her husband, Eva traveled to over forty countries as educators and tourists. Egypt, Israel and Peru were some of their most memorable destinations. Eva spoke Hungarian, German, English and Spanish fluently. Her life was a witness to her faith that she lived and shared with others. She is survived by Arthur - her loving best friend and husband for 48 years - and their two sons Paul (Caryn) and Carl (Karen) and their five grandchildren - James, Luke, Susan, Meg and Carl. Funeral Service Saturday 11:00AM at Smith Corcoran Funeral Home 6150 N. Cicero Ave, Chicago. Interment Irving Park Cemetery. Visitation Friday 4:00pm until 9:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Eva's memory to NABE, the National Association for Bilingual Education, 8701 Georgia Avenue, Suite 611, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Please make a note of Eva's name on any donations. For funeral information call 773-736-3833 or visit Eva's memorial at www.smithcorcoran.com

I was thinking about Eva today and googled her, to find her obituary. It made me very sad. I first met Eva in fourth grade when she came to Trumbull school. She was assigned to my classroom because she didn’t speak English, and I was assigned to teach her English! She soon progressed out of our class, and I did not see her again until 1963. Remarkably we were both assigned to teach at Crane High School, and our classrooms were next-door to each other.
I left Crane in 1966, and lost touch with Eva once again, until today. I have also ordered her book which I will cherish.
I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Arthur and her family, although I know it’s several years late.

As a parent of one of her Students at Inter-American School, I am grateful for her vision and dedication that helped my daughter become the woman she is today. She was always respectful and caring about her students, teachers and parents. We are proud to have known her.

Onkel Art and family- So sorry you had to say goodbye, even if it is for a short time. God is always faithful and is with you during this difficult time. I have such wonderful memories of our times together and really enjoyed her laugh and smile and how down to earth she was even with her vast intelligence. I wish I could come, but have too much on my plate and haven't been feeling great lately. My parents will be there though. Lot's of love and prayers! Love, Gela

for the last 12 years, I took long videos on the annual Christmas parties at Eva's and Arthur's home at Bunker Hill in Niles Illinois. We were all singing German and English Christmas songs. This time (2011) the party was given by Sabine and Larry in Lincolnshire.

We all missed Eva dearly.

Best wishes from Werner Falkenberg--Chicago

To the Family of Eva Helwing.
I had the pleasure of knowing Eva through my work at Northeastern Illinois University. I placed many of our education field experience students at Eva's school. Eva was the perfect mentor! She was always there when I needed her to assist in providing the "perfect placement." She was a taskmaster who asked nothing more of our students than she demanded of herself or her teachers. She will be missed, I am sure, by all those who knew, loved, and were touched by her.
May God bless you all and keep you in the hollow of His hand.

Art and Family,
Our sincere sympathy at the passing of your beautiful( both spiritually and physically) Eva. She had the gift of encouragement for everyone.(1 Peter 4:10) Both of you were so kind and encouraging to us in the early years of our own marriage. We have great memories of visits to Vero Beach with you. She was quite an accomplished woman ,but remembering conversations with her , we realize she was always telling us something good about someone else or asking about us rather than "tooting her own horn" . Although the pain of human separation is so difficult , our Lord understands it and we pray He will give you His peace that passes all understanding .We know your beloved Eva has heard, "Well done, good and faithful servant". We're sure that although we are saddened, heaven is even a bit more lovely now that she is there.
Blessings,
Victoria and Arthur Schmidt
