Eugene Nesin Obituary

March 27, 1942 - February 9, 2009

Monticello, NY

Eugene David Nesin passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 9, 2009 at home.

He was born on March 27, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Alexander and Pauline Karant Nesin.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen, at home; his sister, Sandra Plafker and her husband, Lloyd of Half Moon Bay, California; his brother, Merritt and his wife, Roslyn of Stamford, Connecticut; five children: Jessica and Paul at home, Beth Nesin-Culligan and her husband, Tim, Debra Nesin and her companion, Richard, Sheri Bisland and her husband, Kip, all of Monticello; grandchildren: Channyn and Dylan, Courtney and Lee, Sarah and Greg, Carly, Emily, Samantha and Alexander; many cousins, nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Eugene was the owner of Rock Ridge Kennels in Monticello along with his wife, Ellen. He was an active member of the National Ski Patrol at Holiday Mountain, the Monticello Central School District Board of Education for over 30 years, the Monticello Kiwanis, the Wurtsboro H.O.G.s (Harley Owners Group), a past councilman for the Town of Thompson, and a member of Temple Sholom in Monticello.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 10, at 1 p.m. at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway in Monticello with Rabbi Michele Brand Medwin officiating. Interment will follow at the Temple Sholom Cemetery, Southwoods Drive in Monticello. The family will sit Shiva at the Nesin home in Monticello Wednesday through Friday afternoon at sundown and again from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday evening.

Because Eugene was a strong advocate of the arts in education, a scholarship will be established in his memory at a later date. At this time, memorial donations may be made in Eugene's name to Temple Sholom or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home of Monticello. For additional information, please visit www.josephngarlickfuneralhome.com.

The few times I met Grandpa Eugene he was so funny, full of life and quick whitted. I thank you for the family that you have shared with me. I remember Courtney telling me that "my Grandpa asked about you and he never does that, he must like you". You will be greatly missed!

Dear Ellen and family,
I was so sorry to have read of Gene's passing. I know this is a very tough time for you Ellen because I just heard that your sister also recently passed away. I'm sure your family and friends will make you strong and help you through. He was a great man and very well loved, both at the ski hill and around town. When I think of the ski hill I often think of Gene. He was just always there.

Your Dad was someone special. I know he loved you all as he spoke of you proudly. You were very lucky to have such a Dad in your life. Smile and laugh because that is what he loves to see. His memories will help you to do that in time.
Love,
Barb

We are very deeply saddened by the news of Gene's passing. We will always remember meeting at Eisenhower Hall before performances, but most importantly for the wonderful care you provided to our "children" Sheba and Baxter, especially during our relocation south. We also appreciated your contribution of service to the Monticello School Board. Our deepest sympathy to Gene's family during this time of grief and mourning. Keeping you in our prayers.

Dear Beth, Courtney and family,

There is such great sorrow in the loss of a beloved father and grandfather, but it is even harder to bear, I am sure, when he is taken so quickly and at such a young age. I am sorry I am unable to be with you, but know that our thoughts are with you. We have both found, that although it never gets easy to accept, that time, and your fond memories will bring you comfort.
With much love,
Adrianne and Mike

Grandpa,

If tears could build a stairway
And memories were a lane
We would walk right up to Heaven
And bring you back again

No farewell words were spoken
No time to say goodbye
You were gone before we knew it
And only God knows why

Our hearts still ache in sadness
And secret tears still flow
What it meant to lose you
No on will ever know

But know we know you want us
To mourn for you no more
To remember all the happy times
Life still has much in store

Since you’ll never be forgotten
We pledge to you today
A hallowed place within our hearts
Is where you’ll always stay
