I remember swimming in the Gingold's pool when my family lived in Springfield in the 1950's. We were friends with the kids and Ethel was always lovely. My condolences to the family. Jill Sherman Meyer

Jan, I am so sorry for your loss. I remember your mom from when were were children, from her example as I studied social services and as a dedicated, dynamic woman who cared so deeply for others. I hope you and your brother and sister can find comfort in your memories and knowing your mom was a blessing to the Springfield community.

I met Ethel as a college intern at the Department of Correction in 1987 when I was attending the U of I. Partially due to her encouragement and help, I devoted the early years of career as an attorney to working the intake desk at the ACLU in Chicago in the 90s. Her encouragement meant a lot to me during those years. She was a wonderful person.

It was an honor to travel with Ethel on her amazing journey through life. She would say that there is so much more to do, and she's right. But her family and her friends can rightly be proud of how much she gave and kept on giving. R.I.P. Ethel. You did good!

I was honored to know and do volunteer work with Ethel during my years in Springfield. What a lady! What a warrior! What a innovator! I am a community volunteer/activist myself and I worked on different projects with Ethel. She was our elder stateswoman of people power! So sorry to learn of her death. Surely she is helping to organize issues in Heaven right now, and the angels are listening! Godspeeeeeeeeeeeeed to Ethel! She was the greatest and an inspiration indeed.

Ethel was pure joy and delight and I am a better person for knowing her and having her in my life. Her amazing wealth of knowledge and commitment to change for the greater good influenced me as a young woman and mother; she is a role model for me as I age. Ethel was such a giving person, in every way and the most complimentary person I've known. The last time I was there she located her stocked gift drawer and pulled out a present for my youngest. We love you Ethel, from all of our families. Love to your family. Rest sweetly.

We were so saddened to hear about Aunt Ethel. I will always remember her when I used to visit as a kid. It was so much fun at her house. Especially the pool and playing with her former cat Taitai. She is one woman who was adored and always reached out to others. Even if they were in jail. We will miss her dearly. Rest in peace now and know that we love you. The Nguyen Family(Tucson, AZ) With deepest sympathies to the gingold family.

Ethel and my mother, Kathryn Myers Spiegel, were best friends; she was like an aunt to me. Reading her obituary touches upon her lifelong commitment to social justice, which will continue to inspire me throughout my life. Basking in her love was, as she often said, "pure joy."
The world was a better place because of Ethel.
I send loving condolences to her family.

I am so sorry to hear about Ethel's death. What a great lady and the number of lives she touched was uncountable. Not only was she a champion of justice for all people, she also served as a wonderful role model for many younger women, including myself. God bless her family and rest in peace, Ethel. Susy Woods
