Esther Port Obituary

Port, Esther Garber of Skokie, IL, passed away peacefully June 24, 2009 at the age of 99. She is survived by her devoted daughter Norma Lee Newberger, her loving grandsons Matthew Newberger and Dr. Todd Newberger (Dr. Lori), great granddaughter Sarah Newberger, niece Brooke Garber Neidich (Daniel), nephew Blair Garber (Barbara), and sister in law Deanna Garber. She is predeceased by her husband Oscar Port and her brother Sidney Garber. A lifelong Chicagoan, Esther graduated with her teaching degree from Northwestern University and taught for the Chicago Public Schools for over thirty years. Upon her retirement from teaching, Mrs. Port worked at Loop Synagogue and then at her brother's jewelry store with tireless energy and enthusiasm, reluctantly retiring at the age of 97. A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, June 25th at Shalom Memorial Park, 2995 Wilke Road Arlington Heights, IL 60004. 847-255-3520.
