Remembering Ernest from Ireland. What a lovely legacy to leave behind-- such kindness and generosity.
The world would surely be a better place if we all possessed and shared some of his characteristics.
My mother , Brenda, was first cousin of Ernest.

I have just been reading about Ernest and the superb legacy he leaves behind. My mother, Brenda Nunan, from Ballyviniter in Mallow,Co Cork, was a first cousin of Ernest. Unfortunately, my generation of the Nunan family has lost contact with our descendents who emigrated to Wales and the USA. My daughter, Brenda, spent a summer in Chigago as a student in 2002 and I am thinking what a great shame it was that she didn't know of the existence of Ernest then. It would have been nice for Brenda, a great grand niece of Pauline Nunan--mother of Ernest--to have met and chatted with Ernest.
May he rest in peace.

I met Ernest Wentcher as a soon to be graduate from high school 5 years ago when interviewing for his scholarship opportunity for students in the Chicago area attended Chicago Public Schools. During the interview and while hearing about his own past, I could really see how he and the committee cared about the students. I remember them asking about my mother who had only attended the first interview with me, and how she was doing the next time i saw them and it was very encouraging to see the sincerity. I will never forget his generosity towards others and the willingness to help others achieve their goals.

My first boss out of college with the Equitable, first on LaSalle Street, then Michigan Blvd. He mastered everything he attempted. A good and decent man.

Uncle Ernie helped me land my first of many appointments in property management when he boldly called my interviewer at said real estate company to describe why I would be the best candidate to manage a 24 story high rise with 3 small children no less - miraculously, I was hired!
Many years later I was had a position down town just a few blocks from his home on 535. Some weeks included Saturday hours when we wood have dinner together as a bonus at the end of a long week. He listened to my stories and had helpful advice on how to address difficult board members, disgruntled owners, or unhappy staff members - he could see both sides of an argument and strategize a winning position. Uncle Ernie was a compelling team player and it was a great comfort to have him on my team!

Uncle Ernie
I will remember you on a wintery day with snow falling on North Michigan Avenue. You were in your great wool coat, waving and greeting all the people you met. I felt like I was walking with the mayor.

I cherish the memories I have of Ernest. For many years, he was a mentor to me while I worked at the Chicago Crime Commission. From the moment he hired me, he was always interested in my life, my family and my ideas... I will always think of him as "my favorite". I was really honored when he came to think of me as his friend and not just an employee. To be a friend of such an impressive man! I'm so pleased that he led such a wonderful and blessed life...he deserved every wonderful moment. He brought so much humor and love to this world. I will miss you Geronimo....(he told me to call him that...only he knows why!) Katie Kirby
