Ernest Outlaw Obituary

Outlaw, Ernest "Ernie" 75, a long time Chicago jazz bass player, on July 12, 2003. Survivors include granddaughter, Joelle, daughters, Monica and Barbara, beloved companion, Joyce Doolin, sisters, Montie Outlaw Porter and Marilyn Outlaw McKnight, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mr. Outlaw was preceded in death by his wife, Essie Outlaw, in 1984 and his sister, Elaine Outlaw. In addition to the bassviolin, Ernie was a saxaphonist in the 427th army band in WWII playing all over Europe and at the reinterment of General George C. Patton in Luxembourg. He also played with numerous artists including James Moody, Joe Pass and Sonny Stitt. Ernie played around the country including Birdland in New York until he went with the Chicago Playboy Club for 25 years until its closure. He continued to teach bass and play around Chicago until illness forced him to stop but continued to listen and discuss his love of music with his numerous extended musician family. Interment will be private at Oakwood Cemetery in Chicago. A memorial gathering will be planned at a later date. Donations may be made to the Diabetes or Kidney Foundations.

Whenever my daughter Lova bops her head to the radio or claps her hands to a beat or sings love songs on daddy's guitar we know Ernest Outlaw's blood and cool style lives and breathes in Sweden. We are all sad here that we didn't know you better Uncle Ernest, but I, Ralph, am touched to have known you at all. Rock On! And thanks for the music.

Dear Barbara & Monica,

My memories of your Dad, my one and only Uncle Ernest/Brother, are long and sweet --beginning with a train ride from Oakland to L.A. under his supervision. Ricky and I were so impressed with his imposing presence --in military uniform! I won't fill the guestbook up with reminiscences, but I do have a cherished trove of stories. As you know, in addition to being a fine musician, your dad was a master storyteller with a great sense of humor. I feel blessed to have known him, and I trust that --even as you grieve his loss-- you must be smiling amd beaming with pride!

Love,

Tam

Barbara, Monica, Joyce, Montie and Marilyn my thoughts and prayers are with you and your families at this time of great loss and sadness. Ernest will always be fondly remembered and dearly missed as a great father, brother, uncle, husband, companion and grandfather.

I know he is in good company with other hip jazz cats such as Sassy V., Ella F., Miles D., Dizzy G., Carmen M., Nina S., Joe W., etc. and so many other (too many to mention here) truly great lovers of traditional straight ahead REAL JAZZ!!

Ernie has had a full and rich life here on earth and now he has gone to the next level to be reunited with his family, friends and fellow musicians who dearly love and cherish him.

Ernie is in peace for all of eternity and he will always be missed and in our thoughts everyday.

Dearest Monica and Barbara,

I can't tell you how many good and some even funny(!) memories i have of your dad. he was so kind and sweet to me and i was such a dorky country bumpkin (you know, hay stickin outa my pants), but he showed me kindness anyway. although, occasionally he did get after us if we were too crazy!! he has left an impact on all who were privileged to know him, and you guys are a proud legacy to him.
love & kisses,
rosie
