Emma Hendricks Obituary

BOURNE — Emma Betty (Dickey) Hendricks of Bourne died on Friday, July 30, 2010, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the dear friend and companion of Donald Thomas of Pocasset and the wife of the late Clyde R. Hendricks.

A lifelong resident of Cape Cod, Betty was born in Dennisport on November 24, 1919. She was the youngest of six children born to Frank and Bessie Dickey. She attended school in Dennis, graduating from Dennis High School in 1938. During the Second World War, Betty worked as a civilian operator at Camp Edwards where she met her husband, Clyde.

After marrying, Betty dedicated herself to her home and family. She became a member of the Bourne Methodist Church in the early 1950s. She was very involved in the Women's Fellowship for many years. Cooking was her main passion. Collecting recipes and experimenting in the kitchen dominated her time. In addition, Betty knitted, sewed, and did other handwork. She played the piano and enjoyed singing and listening to music. She also loved to shop and to sit in her yard looking at the plants and the birds. She was very proud to be a grandmother and recently a great- grandmother.

Besides her friend Donald, Betty is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Bob Reali of Bourne; her sister, Hazel Cochrane of Brewster; a granddaughter, Bethany Bennett of New Bedford; a grandson, Brendan Reali of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Bourne United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 7, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to Bourne United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 3037, Bourne, MA 02532.
