Elizabeth Nelson Obituary

Nelson, Elizabeth Mary age 88. Praised as an "Outstanding" Chicago Public School Teacher during a 39 year career, Mrs. Nelson passed away August 23, 2008 after a long illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Nelson. She is survived by her loving children, Robert and Judith Nelson, grandchildren Jennifer Snow and Andrew Nelson, and great-grandchildren Stephanie and Ashley Snow, kind aunt to many nieces and nephews. Born August 7, 1920, she was a much honored Elementary School Teacher, primarily at Nathan Hale School. In 1988, when the majority of Chicago Public Schools scored below the state-wide average in reading tests, her third grade class received special commendation for posting a score among the very best in Illinois. I worked with and knew Betty for thirty years at Hale and St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. She was a kind, sharp lady with a wry sense of humor and always a delight. Our many conversations were a joy. May she rest in peace.

We will miss you. Love Barb, Carol, Jack, Kris, Tricia, Sara & Joe

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
