The life lessons learned at the ripe old age of 12 can never be forgotten. The guidance given to thousands of young people and hundreds of teachers with an intellectual homespun flair will forever be remembered. I look back on my time at St. Philip Neri and remember not only why I became an educator but why I am the person I am. Mrs. Elliston had so much to do with my personal development. She talked to you as child, but treated you with respect. She lectured but not too harshly, and she sat behind that desk and taught us how to treat each other. I flash back to the many assemblies, listening to the Jackson Five Christmas album on that old green record player with Eugene, Danielle and I sitting next to the teachers desk because we talked way too much! Later in life, I came to respect her in a different way. She kept tabs on me and sent me notes through my mother. I loved Mrs. Elliston, and I know she loved all of us through her passion for her craft. To her family, all of our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Thank you for sharing her with all of us over all these years, and I am glad she spent her retirement visiting and traveling to spend time with her family.

I was also taught by Mrs. Williams at Neri in 1981 & 1982. She first recognized that I loved & was good at writing. She encouraged me to write stories & poems as well as papers on African-American history. Having writing as an outlet at the time was very important to me, so I never forgot Mrs. Williams. I wrote for my high school newspaper & used writing during college. Therefore, it is not a myth that one teacher can change a person's life. I would like to thank the entire family of Mrs. Eleanor Williams for her contribution to education. You are in my prayers.

Please accept my families deepest sympathies on the lost of Mrs. Elliston. She was my 8th grade teacher at St.Philip Neri. She inspired many and was loved by all. She expected us to always do our best. Her love of English, writing, and reading became our love. I don't know if she ever knew how much she touched my life. She gave her students tough love. She fussed at us for doing wrong, but she always showed us love. She has lawyers, accountants, teachers, nurses, and many other professional, she helped form into productive citizens. I loved her and I hoped that in my teaching career that I touch as many students as she has,

Please accept my deepest sympathies on your loss. I loved your mom because she made me believe that I could do and be anything. Ms. Williams made a huge impact on my life at St. Philip Neri and years after. I have thought of her often in my own teaching career. I only hope that I made a small difference in the lives of my students as your mother did in mine.

God bless,

Stephanie Walters, class of 1983 St. Philip Neri
