Eleanor Spiggle Obituary

Eleanor Messick Spiggle, 86, of Roanoke, died peacefully on Thursday, May 8, 2008, after a brief illness. Known by everyone as "Bootsie," she was born in Johnson City, Tenn., and spent the rest of her life in Roanoke where she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She attended Longwood College and was a member of Orchisis. A devoted wife and mother, she was married to James McCorkle Spiggle, who predeceased her. She is survived by her son, James Exum Spiggle, of Roanoke; her daughter, Susan Spiggle, of Columbia, Conn.; her sister, Anne Messick Meek, of Roanoke; and her brother, William Messick, of Southern Pines, N.C. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews and her two little furry children, kitty cats, Natasha and Tiger. Bootsie had a wide network of friends and neighbors. She was an avid bridge player and played well enough to earn the title of Life Time Bridge Master. She was also an accomplished pianist and entertained her friends for hours playing their musical requests. She was a gracious, hospitable, optimistic person and will always be remembered by her son and daughter as a nurturing and supportive mother. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Franklin Road, at 12 noon Monday, May 19, 2008. The family will receive friends at a reception in the Parrish hall after the service. In lieu flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements are by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel and Crematory, 540-982-2100.

I spent numerous happy days (and nights) in the Spiggle household, and I will always remember Bootsie fondly. She was a very warm and generous person, and will surely be missed by many.

I am deeply sadden to learn of Bootsie's passing away last week. Of all Mother's good friends, your Mother was one of my favorites. We will all miss her, but it will be impossible to forget her. My deepest
sympathy to you, Jim and Sue.
