Elaine Fitzsimmons Obituary

Elaine Fitzsimmons, 79, of Davenport, died Sunday, November 12, 2006, at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, where the family will greet visitors 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Entombment will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Davenport DOES Drove #217 or to St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Davenport.
Elaine was born November 5, 1927, in Moline, to Everette C. and Beryl (Gray) Harper. She married H.T. Fitzsimmons in May 1947. She graduated from Davenport High School with the class of '45, having completed the three-year "Normal Training Course," allowing her to start teaching that fall. She later graduated from Marycrest College and did post graduate work at the University of Iowa. In 1967, she and Hube were blessed with a daughter, Erin Maureen, and in 1969, Elaine went back to teaching, enjoying both motherhood and teaching. She taught school for more than 42 years, beginning her career in a one-room school house. In 1980, she was honored by the Davenport Public Schools for her pioneering work in Gifted and Talented Education. Elaine retired from teaching in 1991, due to ill health. Since that time, Hube retired from the Davenport Police Department, Erin's career flourished, granddaughters, Elizabeth and Victoria, were born, and she enjoyed her volunteer work, friends and Euchre.
Her memberships included Retired Teachers Association, Retired Police and Widows Association, Herbert Hoover Museum (Patron), Colonel Davenport House (volunteer), Davenport Literacy Society (President), and DOES Drove #217.
Survivors include her husband, Hubert T. Fitzsimmons; daughter, Erin Maureen Fitzsimmons, and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Victoria Solbrig, all of Swisher, Iowa; sister, Maxine (Lennie) McOsker, of Alva, Oklahoma; brother, Roy Charles (Cheryl) Harper, of Moline; sister-in-law, Jean Fitzsimmons, of Davenport; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Richard and Cloyd Harper.
