Edwin Landow Obituary

Landow, Edwin S.

Edwin S. Landow was born on September 13, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to Stanley and Bridget (nee Balukiewicz) Landow. He passed away on February 24, 2022. Edwin is survived by his children Shirley (Stanley) Dzik, Gary Landow and Diane (David) Newman; his grandchildren Tricia (Robert) Spadafore, Steven (Chrissy) Dzik, Mark (Jen) Landow, Paul Landow and Jack Newman; his great-grandchildren Matthew, Ryan and Charlotte Spadafore, Kyle and Sydney Dzik and Riley Landow; his sister Joan (William) Weichbrodt; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of seventy-three years Shirley Landow (nee Maday), his sister Jean (the late Norbert) Golinski and his parents. By far, his greatest joy in life was being with his family and friends but Edwin was also committed to service to his country and community. Edwin was a World War II veteran enlisting in 1943 in the Army Air Corps. During his service, he received training on a "new and secret" technology called "radar" and became a Radar Bomb Sight Instructor teaching bombardiers and navigators how to use radar technology. Edwin was honorably discharged in 1946 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1946, Edwin joined Zenith Electronics Corporation. As a leader in the prototype engineering organization, he loved developing new technology for the television industry. In 1973, he was awarded a patent. Edwin retired after more than 40 years of service. Edwin was a member of the American Legion Post 208, chaplain for the American Legion Ninth District, an invited member of The Forty and Eight Fraternal and Charitable Honor Society of American Veterans, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. For many years, he was a crossing guard supervisor for Arlington Heights School District 25 and was invited to speak at numerous elementary schools over the years on the history of the American Flag and World War II. In 2004, Edwin was the recipient of the Chaplain Of The Year Award for the State of Illinois, Department of American Legion. In 2008, Edwin received the Arlington Heights "Young at Heart" Heart of Gold Award in recognition of his contributions to the community. In 2014, he was awarded the American Legion Post 208 "Legionnaire Person of the Year".
