Memories and Condolences
for Edward Newman

Not sure what to say?

March 18, 2011

Dear Mary Ann,

At an appointment at MAI today, I learned of your dad's passing. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. Thank you for the referral you gave me 30 years ago when I was looking a for a primary care physician. Over the years, your dad took very good care of me, although the head replacement recommendation was not something I ever acted on. Dr. Newman went to bat for me on more than one occasion when I needed to see a specialist, never taking no for an answer if the other physician's schedule was full. That's when the colorful language came out. Dr. Newman took a great interest in my health and I felt he treated me as if I were his own son, something which is truly remarkable given his case load. I will miss him and his special demeanor.

Ed Newman was my friend and my doctor for years. In all the good ways a man can love another man, I loved the guy. He was different, and he could be impossible. But he cared. He cared for poor Helen Alford from Jackson, Mississippi at my request - and was able to get her social security in her 60's. He cared for my wife from before we were married. Eddie was a fine physician, but that does not do it. Eddie was a perceptive, thoughtful, demanding genius. We met in 1955. Eddie was living in Hyde Park where I was raised from 10 years of age. His relations in Chicago were incredible, but it did not matter. When I sent him a poor man, that man received Ed's best. I delivered Jim Gogarty, service manager of Loeber Motors, 5625 North Broadway, to his office - and then to Michael Reese. Surgery the next day saved his life. It was a heart sac, turning to concrete. We worked on foreigners with nothing. The man knew the oath. Meanwhile, he cared for Jay Pritzker and many in Jay's bracket. Ed was funny, sharp witted, acutely aware and analytical. He loved his work, patients, his family and life. He was fooled by no one. Edward A. Newman was unique. Eddie was delightful. Chicago may have others like him. It was Eddie's town, from City Hall to the University of Chicago. My love to Lori, Sandy Lewis

Lori, Steve and Mary Ann and Nancy: Heratbroken that I retuned from NASA today to learn of Eddie's passing. Our friendship goes back to my return from the Army in 52, when he told me that being in the Army 'screwed' up a few things, but he would fix them. And fix it he did. All through the years Eddie was a good friend and kept me healthly. He encouraged me to move ahead and often at the Saturday lunches with Kup took a special interest in suggesting and helping not only with medical advise but with making me feel I was one of "Eddie Elite Pals". During my recent procedure at NMH I told the nurse I was friend of Eddie Newman and the attitude of the entire staff was very much improved. The medical community, Northwestern and the city lost a great asset and a devoted friend. I'll think of him always. My thoughts of with the family and his legion of friends. Jerry Field

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Edward Newman. I had the good fortune of serving on a number of committees with him, particulary at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He always provided a fine answer to a complex problem, and having him on the committee gave me great confidence that the hospital was spending its money wisely and that Eddie would keep us going in the right direction. He certainly did.

For all who loved and revered Dr. Newman,

Eddie Newman set the medical treatment bar for each of us fortunate to have been his patient.

Remembrances of Dr. Newman's humaneness resonate within us all. When my husband, Ed, at age over-65 had brain surgery, I brought a large Teddy Bear to his hospital room to comfort him. Eddie was heartfelt in his praise of my creativity as he expressed "...that was a good idea."

Lastly, a Dr. Newman quote from my husband "...I didn't make you sick but I will make you well."

With loving memories,

Steve,
My condolences to you and your family. A legend in Chicago medicine is gone.

May 24, 2010

Steve, Mary Ann and Nancy, My brother and his wife told me this news yesterday and we were greatly saddened. His passing brings to mind many fond memories of him but particularly from a vacation in Colorado in the mid-sixties where your family was generous to include me; of his enormous attentiveness to the health of so many, including some of my relatives, particularly to the health of my late father. Most of all, I thought his unique directness was a human quality that was a great gift to all of us. Judy joins me in expressing our condolences to all of you. He will be missed. Peter Kovler
